Power Outages: what do you do?

We just had one last weekend. Only half the house had an outage strangely enough, but that included the computer. So I read and folded some laundry. When the crew came to fix the problem, they turned off all the power (for safety reasons) but at that time we were eatting dinner. So yeah, eat steadily cooling food during a blackout, that was a first.

Depending on what time it happens, we usually go sleep or go out for lunch or dinner. We don't bother with fires and candles usually.

 

I usually read if there's daylight or sleep until the hydro comes back on so I can do my stuff online...

 

One of the things that isn't a problem now that I live in a town is water during a blackout. When I lived out in the country there was no water - no electricity, no well pump.

However, about ten years ago, when a major unexpected snowstorm took out a lot of power poles as well as power lines and power was out in some areas near me for a week, there was talk of having to suspend water service because of intermittent power at the sewer plant.

I remember when I lived out in the sticks that I'd have to fill up the bathtub before major snowstorms and then bail water into the toilet tank to get rid of, uh, you know.

"If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down."

Sorry, couldn't resist.

 

Actually, I've been known to brave the elements to take care of business if it was just minor in such conditions (or when our water supply is low).

A long term outage would keep our toilet out of commission because our water pump is electric. Not sure how that will work when we get the town water in...

 

Personally I sit and stare, unblinking at my computer monitor thinking "It'll be back in a minute... can only take a minute... just a minute..."
