    Martaug - I completely agree that Adams is underrated. When Jefferson and Hamilton started their political fighting, Adams tried his best to stay neutral, although, in the end he failed. He broke his relationship with Jefferson, which he came to regret, and then got stabbed in the back by Hamilton. He became a "party of one," because he put the interest of his country first, before politics. Nothing is more evident in that, than how he made the peace with France.

    The only real problem with Adams that I see is the signing of the Alien and Sedition Acts. Just flat out bad laws that he should have seen through.

    At least the worst parts had short lifes, the Alien Friends act only had a 2 year life & the Sedition act had an expiration date of March 3rd, 1801. The naturalization act was repealed in 1802.
    Adams pretty much had to sign these just to get the time to be able to bring about a political end to the "Quasi-War" with france.
