Just click on the X once and WAIT for the ad to collapse (=go away). You do it once and it's gone for good. Might take quite a few seconds as the server's overloaded but once it's gone, it's gone for good. If you still can't get rid of it, just let me know and I'll see if I can disable it for you manually.

I doubt Silvery uses the rest of the site much (and there's no X there either). I couldn't find any quick and easy way to make the ads dismissable on non-forum pages, but they'll be going down in 3 days anyway - hopefully nobody will be too annoyed by them until then.

It's fine Tal. As our beloved Silvery admitted herself, she's just sleep deprived and pissy right now. :p

If only I had waited until September 2012 to buy all those games. I'd be happy as a pig in %^&# for the next two years!!

I don't trust Obsidian to release a good game. I especially can't believe a company that's made it's money release crappy sequels to good games can't afford $1.1m on it's own to develop a game they're bragging about as the second coming of Jes... Baldur's Gate.

Just don't trust them with my money :(.

This is a fascinating business funding model. Im not sure yet what my views are on it. Effectively they're asking people to pre-purchase a game that isn't made yet, and to do so at different prices depending on how much you really want it. In theory it's a beautiful piece of economic theory but not sure how it would in practice.

It's been around for quite some time now and it works... a number of very interesting games are currently in development exclusively because of crowd funding. And not only games - there are dozens of very interesting other projects on KS.

Of course, whether the end result will really be better games is still up for debate and only time will tell. My biggest concern is the amount of fluff that every developer has to stuff into their games because people buy into it - when you've got a whole game full of cameo NPCs, weapons, locations, landmarks, etc. that some individual or group has paid to fit into the game... well, I'm not sure this can realistically be handled not to stand out even when maximum care is applied.

It's working wonderfully in practice! 1.6 million collected in just a few days? And you are still questioning?

The fund raising part is working quite well - for the high profile projects, at least - it's the delivery of the goods that may or may not work.

I suppose, but I'd be more inclined to think that things will work better in this scenario than they would in the standard developer/publisher model.

    Budget handled? - yes
Talented and experienced developer team? - yes
Publisher with its own agenda calling the shots? - no

Obsidian has a great team assembled, and as far as I can see, a near perfect recipe to make a great game. I'm not sure what about this model gives people cause for concern about the finished product above and beyond the the alternative.

I was thinking the same thing. Either a tavern full of world-weary sorcerers (perhaps with a quest board with a familiar name) or else a way to immortalize those we've lost here.

I really think this could be cool if done properly! :)

Well, judging by the poll results I think there's enough interest here to raise at least $1000... stay tuned as I set up our collection box. ;)

I wonder how many pledges they'll get that are over the threshold of being included in the game? They might have some interesting challenges trying to fit it all in.

Apparently they're going to unveil a tier aimed at forum communities today so I'm going to hold off until the details are out - which should be very soon. Stay tuned!
