I have never liked punk except some bands like Clash, Ramones and Bad Religion. I've never like the minimalistic musical orientation of punk and most of all I've never liked the nihilistic philosophy of punk. However, there are times that I catch myself singing "California uber alles" or "Pretty vacant".

That's the problem with calling any music 'punk'. Any band with punk origins is fine calling themselves punk, but look at the mega backlash on Greenday. Are they not punk because they make money? Have a recording contract? Don't swear enough in their songs? From the underground (relatively) unknown punk bands, any deal with the music industry is breaking the ideals of the punk mantra.

Greenday swear plenty. they aren't fully punk but they aren't fully pop either. they have fast but often mellow vibe instead of the always fast drum beats and fast guitar. it does seem that if you make it big you lose your punk status though. wonder why?

Punk is very infuential. Don't forget that trash metal was infuenced by heavy metal and punk. And without trash there wouldn't be death metal.
    So yay for punk!

You'll find that those who pride themselves as being into the underground or 'pure' form of a genre tend to look down on any band that makes it big, regardless of the band's origins. It's not just a punk thing, though it's certainly more pronounced there.
