I recently took around 30 toys away from my children, because they consistently weren't cleaning up after themselves, and I had been warning them I would give their toys to less fortunate children if they didn't start getting their acts together.

Well, one afternoon they not only forgot to cleanup, but refused to do so when I said that it was time to do so. I let them know what was going to happen as a consequence and gave them 1 minute to clear their favorite toys from sight. I went and got out my own naughty bag -- a big, black plastic trash bag -- and proceeded to fill it with the various toys that were strewn about our living room, and dramatically walked out of sight with it. I rather think they were testing me.

I felt like a real creep doing it, but you have to follow through on your threats. And honestly, my kids have waaaay too many toys (still). Does that make me a great father, or just a jerk of a dad?

 

It makes you a father, period. I wouldn't label yourself as "great"... yet.... you still have a lot of work ahead of you!

 

I don't think I would actually wear either label, great father or jerk of a dad. I meant to ask a more general question about the act. I could have better worded my question "does this appear to be an example of responsible parenting, or maniacal powermongering?"

I obviously have my own opinion about this, but wouldn't mind hearing what others think. It was Silvery's mention of the naughty bag that made me think of this situation.

 

I understand, I was teasing a bit is all. You made the right decision, you were looking out for them, not yourself.

 

When you think about the phrase tough love, usually you think about a parent being a hardass with their kids.

But my perspective as a parent has changed that understanding. It's "tough" to be the hardass. I'd much rather dish out hugs, let them watch whatever movies they want, and generally do things that put smiles on my kids faces. But that wouldn't likely result in very well behaved kids if they always got what they wanted.

I am used to dishing out discipline, and I'm not above giving spankings when my kids really cross the line. When my 3 year old jumped on his brother's back and left "claw marks" down the length of it... there was a 3 year old with a red bum AND a time out in our house (he happens to HATE timeouts, so they work very well with him, for now).

At any rate, I'm used to dishing out punishments and the like, but sometimes it's downright hard to crush their little worlds, and it doesn't take much for a kid to perceive that their world has imploded on itself. At least that perception doesn't last for very long.

 

Kids are durable. They get over it quickly.

Tonight I am putting in my Tomato and Pepper plants. Our 3 yr old will be assisting. She's a good little helper. More so when she gets to dig! Good thing it's bath night.....

 

Did any of you play Hellgate:london when it first came out? I've been playing the lost london SP version & just found out that Hanbitsoft is going to launch a NA server to go with the japanese & korean servers they have now. They are using a FTP model now.

Nasty storms ripped though are area last night. Luckily no touchdowns for the torndoes in our immmediate area, though Joplin, Missouri was absolutely decimated. 89 deaths. Scary stuff. Went into the basement with the family. My little ones had no clue and saw all of their toys we were storing. It was happy time for them at least.

 

Just watched the "roll a d6" video. That was great. It got me nostalgic for the old days of first playing D&D back in the mid-late 70's (yep I'm an old greybeard). I dug out my old men & magic, just to look at the old rules & noticed that the preferred ratio between players & referee was 20 to 1 ! Can you imagine a DM handling 20 players nowadays?

Yay! I'm as of today officially a Bachelor of Social Sciences. Of course I'm also half-way through my masters but it's good to have that one out of the way.

 

It has been 5 days. Shame.

The Duke will be with us within 5 days, 9 hours and some minutes. And someone is going to pay for making him find those **** keycards.

Meanwhile, pc overhaul month.

 

My desktop is working again! No more being forced to post from my crummy little iPhone! Prepare for a deluge of posts.

I have gotten a hand lent to work for me today and she is overtasked with the sort of work she has to do. Unable to use RegEx on our data she has do her corrections manually. She is proceeding sloooowly. The horror.

Naturally I have a deadline. Today evening. Which means I will have to finish (not to mention correcting the inevitable typos and errors in the XML markup that come with manual corrections) after she leaves, which in turn means I won't go home before 19:00 and which also means I'll be late for my sister's birthday.
