We're back from Oregon/Washington. The trip was great. We had snow and rain and the temps were in the 30's and 40's. It looks like I have some temporary work lined up until I can find a permanent position, which is also good. I'll probably be leaving in the middle of February. My wife loved it up there even with the weather. I'm so excited! It's kind of scary leaving everything and everyone behind but it will be worth it.

Them tourists obviously weren't fit and trim like me ;)

I just found out that my course "prohibits" us from taking part in the running of the bulls because sometime back some Japanese student tried to do it then douched out and froze in the path of an incoming bull and got gored. Why must one always ruin it for the rest?? :bang:

screw that, I'm still doing it ;) but now I'm switching to "Plan B" and will do it sober :D

I need to vent a bit about my mother.

So today we had a fire burning in the fireplace and around 11 PM she asks me to prod the remains a bit so that it cools off faster. So I get up, prod stuff apart so it can cool off. Then she comes down, looks at the fireplace and starts attacking me for being lazy and not having done what she asked. She then proceeds to stack the wood bits one upon the other. So I tell her that I actually did get up and made sure that the bits were far apart and that I don't think putting them close together will have them cool off faster. But to no avail, she had already determined that I had been lazy and started throwing random stuff at my head like how I made sure the barbecue in Leuven (student city) was safe, but at home I couldn't make the effort to do the same (thus implying that I'm a fake and pretend to be more "perfect" than I really am - at least perfect in her conventional view). I then calmly explain that I have actually done the same thing at home and where I study, that she may want to reassess her idea of efficient fireplace clean-up (her reason for stacking bits was: "this is how I've always done it") and that her judgement is unfair and incorrect. She completely ignores me and simply repeats the same insult over and over again. I then get pissed off and point out that she uses the word consequence incorrectly. Of course, she then gets started on another round of insults.

And the thing is, I know her fairly well and I know exactly what sparked this absurd conflict: 1) wildly irrational fears that the house might burn down 2) wildly irrational fears that my bro and I are lazy and won't be able to make a life for ourselves.

    2) is based upon the fact that neither my bro nor myself meet her conformist standards (i.e. work hard, don't ask too many questions, don't be different, keep up appearances...) and that he's failed one of his classes again (he's not a school type, but he's definitely intelligent) and that I had had the "arrogance" to mention that I hadn't been able to really go for it this exam session because I didn't find there to be a lot of challenge (I have a bit of a been there done that feeling with regard to uni at the moment).

She has been calling us lazy the entire day. She has been angry with me for introducing my bro to the MBTI theories, because she thinks it is subversive nonsense that will taint his mind (she doesn't realise yet that we're quite capable of forming our own opinons) and will get him to decide that maybe school isn't the right thing for him (diploma=the holy grail in her opinion). My conclusion is that she had already deemed me lazy before she had even set foot in the living room and that she just felt the need to attack me a little more. I can honestly say that I have absolutely no respect left for her at all.

How can you possibly be like this? And why do I have the feeling that the majority of the population is like this?

Did you suggest that if she keeps yelling like that, you'll just not care?

Wow, Charl, that's some serious f***up.

I know how it feels, though. One side of my family has scorned the fact that I've decided to pursue arts as well as computing since day 1. They wanted me to follow the family tradition -- becoming a construction worker. That just won't work with me.

Irrational fear that I won't be able to fend for myself? Been there too.

Sounds like a recurring issue, too. And that trying to discuss it with her would be like banging your head on the wall. Been there. I bid my time, stacked on the cash, and one day, I packed and left without any further word. Never looked back ever since - been much better this way too.

And school not being for your bro? That's possible, and it's nothing dramatic. Some enjoy abstract stuff, some enjoy more concrete stuff, some enjoy both. In Quebec, we have what's called "professional studies". It's straightfowardly learning a trade. I've been there and I digged the experience - abstract nonsense just doesen't cut it for me.

    Carnival lessons:

    (a) Eat before you drink. As a seasoned warrior I stuck to that rule for my benefit. On my way yesterday I saw the scattered remains of many less wise men and women, and as a striking example a girl in the very undignified act of throwing up all over her costume.

    (b) As a result of above lesson, have your time. There's no rush.

    (c) For short haired persons like me the lack of a mane has always been a shortcoming when I do this sort-of-dancing to heavy metal. Yesterday I found out to my great delight that my rabbit costume's ears are a suitable surrogate.

Four of my friend left for Alberta yesterday.

I'm bound here because of college. Otherwise you can be damn sure I would have tagged along.

It's not all bad, though - 10 months of college left and then I'm gone. In the meanwhile, my friend says he will do a bit of scouting for me. They also plan on renting a house and keeping a place for me.

Counting the days till I get out of stinking old Quebec...

I'm quoting myself because it was a quote - from BG, actually.

Also, there really isn't anything to say. That's why I'm saying it here. Only thread where having nothing to say really fits, right?

    So, saying nothing.

Well Gnarf, my Gerbils said that there is going to be six more week of winter. They have been going to groundhog meetings for years as distinguished guests as a result of them being born with "the gift." You can honestly rely on their word just as much as any of the groundhogs you are likely to encounter.

...well honestly Rev, and you know I say this with the greatest of respect, I don't think you are telling us the whole truth when you "appear" to be saying nothing.... Have you considered that you might be hiding a whole philosophical concept in those deceptively simple words?
