With this talk of "the Raven" by Poe, I remember the Simpson's version where Bart was the Raven, and at one point the line went "Quoth the Raven--Eat My Shorts".

Well, since ravens are still conversation material, I've often caressed the idea of getting a pet raven... the most shocking part? My honeykitten *likes* the idea!!!

Heh...whenever I hear that Edgar Allan Poe poem, I always think of the Simpson's version with Bart as the raven. :rolling:

[IMG] The poem is about Crows?! It's always been about Magpies in this country o_0

    One for sorrow
    Two for joy
    Three for a girl
    Four for a boy
    Five for silver
    Six for gold
Seven for a secret, never to be told.

A group of Magpies and Crows are called murders
A group of Jays is called a scold
a group of Rooks are a parliament or a storytelling because of their nattering.
a group of Ravens is a conspiracy, or even a nevermore

The namings of the collective nouns are from european superstition that corvids were bad luck, their comparative intelligence to other birds in the country would often concern people that they were spirits or or witches that had shifted into another form. There were also beliefs that corvids could read minds and communicate with their chosen master (they always chose the master, not the other way round!)

Often the sight of a flock of the birds would cause the belief something bad would happen, usually related to the collective noun. The strangled cries of Crows and Magpies, the harsh calls of jays flocking in the trees, groups of Rooks settling down nattering long into the night, groups of ravens settling on tall buildings watching silently with sporadic calls.

All adds up to getting an interesting animal names in medieval europe :)

Well, now that you mention it, either one I suppose. But in the case of the latter, the price varies depending on their exact nature. :p

Congrats Splunge, you've almost outdisgusted me. Oh, who am I kidding, your secretions staining my mind are something that are smeared in there for the rest of the day at least.

    I think I need a bath now.

edit: Allright Splunge, you got me interested. How much for a pint of milk? :p

You are waiting for him to make an offer on what you claim is milk? 100% milk? How do we know you haven't topped it up with, err, other 'white stuff'?

Loreseeker, a blessed Easter to you and our other Eastern Christian SP'ers! And a belated wish for a good Passover to our Jewish members.

Gnarf, congrats on the cane, I guess, but I'm sorry it's still so rough.

Ofelix, that truly stinks. Some explanation would have been helpful, to say the least.

It is a bit cooler today with showers off and on. In 4 days the dread interstate shutdown occurs in Knoxville . . . must . . . resist . . . urge to drive there this weekend for no reason just to miss the mess!

    Better to babble, surely.

    My thanks, revmaf. :)

Speaking of Easter, I've been busy this afternoon, and made something for you and all other random babblers out there.
    Check it out.

P.S. I wrote Random Babbling on the egg, but the wax melted too quickly. :(
