Sounds pretty interesting! Did you get to do any of the synthesis, or was the project only on the theoretical part?

Here is an irrelevant rant that most likely only concerns the author, but by a lack of anything better to do, I still will write about it.

Why are some people so oblivious to the concept of personal hygiene? I recently went to the liquor store to acquire some alcoholic delight to celebrate my newfound semi-freedom of anything academically related, excluded of course are the aforementioned evil exams of doom. There was this man who must not have realised the advance made in personal hygiene, his smell was so abhorrent it nearly repealed my desire for alcohol, well almost :p

I teach a class of immigrants who clearly come from cultures that have differing hygiene standards. Likely access to running water was limited in their cultures, but it still is difficult for me -- I'd prefer to keep the door closed while instructing but simply don't have the nasal willpower.

This is not a slam against them -- as I said, their communities in some of the poorest parts of Africa had much more pressing concerns than daily baths and I'm sure deodorents were not even heard of. This does not make them bad people, but rather unfortunate ones. I still wish it were a topic that I could broach more easily.

You could always incorporate a talk about social standards relating to hygiene into your class and hope they take the hint

For some reason, that sounds somewhat "dirty".

Of course, that's probably more due to the way my mind works. :p

You mean your ability to link any sentences regardless of its content to "dirty" talk? Try this: I like eating apples.

(I'm going to regret this later aren't I?)

Just the word "eating" triggers a few ideas **, but I'm pretty sure getting more specific would violate several Board rules. Use your imagination. ;)

(** and I don't want to even think about what "apples" conjurs up.)

    Planescaping :D Enough said.

T2: Heh, we were using one of 2nd generation Grubb's for this, and my biggest project concern was not to spill the damn thing... Used to take me around 15 minutes to store the catalyst away after use (nitrogen, sealing the bottle, fridge) all the way hoping I don't drop the thing on the floor... near nightmare.

Ziad: Yes, we did synthesis - about 5-6 compounds or so worked out (NMR confirmed). The rest turned to a pile of molecular goo. :p

DotW: Dodging roll - critical failure. :p

That is actually a quick fix...make the first 10 minutes of class a lesson of hydrodynamics. Take them outside and spray them down with a hose.

I just got 50 various bridge rectifiers from 50V @1A to 200V @8A. I only needed one...and I have no idea what I'm going to do with the other 49. :bad:

With all the free stuff I've gotten from my work, I should start making electronic project kits and sell them at my school to the 1st semester noobs who need to learn how to solder.

I wonder what comment Splunge will have with "bridge rectifiers"...

I'm going to participate in a scientific experience concerning how the human brains learn sciences facts using an MRI machine (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). My Uni medical department needs volunteers who hasn't had science classes beyond highschool. They are trying to determine exactly which part of the brain is stimulated when the subject (in this case me) is asked "science questions" (whatever that might mean).

Anyway, there's no compensation per se, but I do get an image of my brain which is awesome.

Nice! Too bad about the piles of goo though. Hope they're not toxic glow-in-the-dark molecular goo :p

    Bad say Silvery?

I might be wrong about this, but I think my brain just exploded.

(That's not the comment, but rather the reaction.)

    :p
