In one of my schools (called "liceum"), I had Latin, Greek, antique civilisations, and a special programme of history and literature. I ended up texting people in Latin, heheh. I ultimately went on to study law as my uni faculty, but I passed entry exams for classics and archaeology as well. I got the third score (3% behind the 1st one) in entry exams to Warsaw Institute of Archaeology or whatever name they use in English. The best one in this country, they claim to be reputed worldwide, not like I tend to believe them on this one. I mean, they used to be, but not really are anymore.

 

If I was a tree, what kind of tree would I be? Hmm...

 

From Latin to Law. I guess I can see how that works.

I've heard good things about Warsaw. Although, personally, I didn't want to go there for uni. Too far away from home sweet home in Canada.

@Laiwethel- Where do you go to school? (I'm assuming you're at uni, but which one?)

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Troy...I took a course in Greek Myth in first semester; and I've been half-wondering how the movie will compare. My expectations for it comparing to the myth aren't very high though...so when I do see it, it'll be more for entertainment purposes than for comparison...

 

@ Faerus -- I'm at Trent in Peterborough, though from TO originally. You?

I'm such a Greek mythology geek, so I have some major nitpicks about stuff in Troy, but as a movie for entertainment alone, it's well worth the price.

And there's no way one can compare Homer's "Illiad" to Troy, even though Troy was based very losely(emphasis mine) upon it. Then again, that's just my opinion.

 

@Laiwethel- Queen's, in Kingston ON. Though I live on some desolate military base about 25 mins from Barrie ON.

Heh, I kinda figured the movie would only loosely be based on the Iliad. There are so few Hollywood directors out there now with enough attention to detail or imagination to actually stick to the poem.

I know, I know. Most Hollywood direcctors are just out for making megabucks and entertainment rather than follow any actual storyline written by one of the greatest poets of all time.

I will admit, there weren't as many historical inaccuracies in Troy as there were in Gladiator. Dear gods, that was an abomination for historical accuracy .

 

Wow!! You actually *know* about Borden...which means one of 3 things...:
1) You, or a member of your family or a friend of yours, is or has been in the military. And since Borden is one of the largest training bases in Canada, it stands to reason that you (or that member of your family/friend) would have trained here.
2) You, or someone you know, lives, or has lived in the Barrie area...
3) You, or someone you know, well, umm...I actually forget the third possibility, but I know there was one!! You'll just have to enlighten me...

Highschool friends at Queen's eh? You wouldn't happen to know if any of them are on the fencing team, would you? ( just asking 'cause that's the only school club/team I'm a member of, and it's so small that I know and hang out with most of the fencers).


And now, on a RB note (so the admins/mods don't whack me with "the plaque" for continuing a PM discussion in a public forum... )...I just noticed the opening of 2 new forums, and am understandably intrigued...or maybe that's just the codeine speaking...

just because you don't like a band doesn't mean it should be banned. It's like burning books because you can't read.

 

@Laiwethel: Illiad was based quite losely on factual events, too

From Latin to law is sort of natural, especially if you want to specialise in Roman Law (there actually are such people) or ecclesiastic laws (more like my field).

However, I more and more realise that archaeology might actually have been a better choice. Being versed in laws and how they work on the technical side matches my character and will surely help in life, but archaeology could have bring more joy to that life. Give me a book on some weird civilisation and one on some area of law and I'll choose the former one in no time.

I hope it'll be possible to me to study archaeology at some point in my life and combine the two fields or switch over entirely. It would be a stupid thing not to get a Master's in law if I've already started it.

I prefer dead people to corporate people, too.

I am well aware of the study of Roman Law, we've been discussing some aspects of it in my Roman history class that I'm taking over the summer.

I'm hoping to get as many classical archaeology courses as possible, since I know that one of the summer courses offered at my uni is an archaeological field school in Tunisia, but you have to be invited to go on the trip by the professor. That kind of course is my idea of heaven.

 

Right. Our archaeologists dig in Ptolemais there. It also takes a professor to sign you on, but I've heard it's not as great a deal as they say.

 

I've heard fantastic things about the dig that is run through my school, but then again, I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Side note: Looking at the last two posts, I realize this is the RB...

I've noticed a thing about myself in the last few weeks, I'm becoming less an less of a member of these boards...
All I now wait for is the eviction notice. "You are not visiting the boards enough to be a member of them; you must leave!".
