It's been a while sense I posted here... I don't know why tough... I've lost point on my last english paper because I spelt word differently than the rest of the class but I knew I was right. Err I don't know realy how to explain but lemme give you examples it will be easier to get my point clear.

    Word I wrote: Capitalise
    Correction of the Teacher: Capitalize

    another one: chiselled
    Correction: Chiseled

and others I don't remember... I don't understand why. It make me mad  I know I wrote those words correctly

Ever checked the spellchecker linked to on this forum? tsk :p

@BTA, I don't know what kind of english they speak in Canada, but:
    Capitalise
    Chiselled

    Edit numero dos:
Although the dictionary says they are valid??

Perhaps you need to get your teacher to take a second look. In both of your examples, both spellings are valid variants in English.

Ofelix, your teacher uses American spelling. "Capitalise" and "chiselled" is proper British spelling, but American spelling is "capitalize" and "chiseled". "Capitalize" is proper in both British and American English. If you're in Canada, I would expect your teacher to favour British spelling over American. At any rate, to the best of my knowledge, British spelling is proper in Canada, thus making your teacher a nasty bugger.

Well I never had problem with my spelling thus far, well until I meet her anyway, I'll say it again english isn't my mother language perhaps someone from English Canada could tell... Which one if official

But I've always used ¨s¨ and double ¨l¨ and I never had any problems

But come to think of it, I think she learned english in the US, 'coz she a greek. I mean Marry Despotakis isn't very ¨english¨

Also come to think of it her class is very pro-american, I mean we will read american authors. And she teach us american english and so on.

The first book will have the theme ¨The danger of comunism, the benefit of Capitalisism¨

It might explain a thing or two.

It isn't her fault that she learned the wrong spellings for the English language. If she learned it in America, then she learned it wrong. Why is it wrong? Because when America was formed, the words were changed from proper English.

Doesn't matter. She's a teacher and that incurs responsibility. She can't mark proper language as mistakes, no matter her political sentiments.

I didn't say that she was allowed to mark things wrong. Maybe she just doesn't know that there is a difference. It isn't really something that comes up in a regular conversation.

Ofelix I can tell you that every teacher that I ever had in school accepted both the proper and the American spelling of words. In fact, most of them would strongly encourage the use of the proper British spelling. I think that you should grab a copy of the Oxford dictionary and bring it in to prove your point.

There is no way the woman doesn't realise the proper British spelling. How would she get an arts degree in English if she didn't? Come on, even non-native speakers know such obvious things.

    "Proper British spelling" in America??
Yeah, right, you Brits are just trying to take over the world again.
We probably don't even have "proper British spelling" in Australia and we're still considered basically a British Subject.

On a lighter note, learned a couple of new words lately - 'Eskyvate' is when you have to dig down to the bottom of the esky for the last beer, and 'cucumbered/cuecumbered' is when you join the end of a fast-moving cue and it suddenly slows down. :D

I'm back online after a few days without power.
(bet noone even missed me ;) )

Luckily, my house escaped damage yet again. The trees, however, are another story. They're strewn all over, some whole, other in bits. I've got pictures I'll post a link to soon.

I'm really hoping this is the last hurricane that decides to nail Florida any time soon. So far, I've been lucky, but I'm not sure how many more storms my luck would survive...

What do you mean we don't have proper British spelling in Australia? Anyone spelling things the American way here (around me, that is) will be attacked by the Grammar Police (also me) for the crime of Butchery of the English Language While Thinking It's Right.

No problem. It's just that the whole talk about people getting shot made me cringe a couple of days ago. Will get over it soon.

Hey Tal, you should be REALLY happy that only ONE was problematic. Last time (EDIT: well, it was the first time too...) I took out my wisdom teeth they were ALL growing sideways. One was even pushing UNDER the tooth next to it. It took the surgeon (yes, surgeon. The "regular" dentist said this was way out of his league) about an hour to get it out (he usually does such things in around 10-15 minutes. He's really good).

Chev, you really should cut down on the coffee. And there's a very dear friend I would like you to meet (/me introduces Sleep)

The entire conversation about proper English spelling is fun. I mean, the Canadians in Quebec write French differently from everyone in France, yet the French don't seem to mind it that much. But the Brits (and the Canadians and the Australians too it seems) keep complaining about spelling in the US being "wrong".

See, the nice thing with written Arabic is that there is only one way to do things :)

Back to the topic that is dear to my heart...

Seminar in 23 hours! And it's not even done! And instead of working on the beeping thing I'm here talking about wisdom teeth and proper English. This is surreal.

SP is becoming a real addiction it seems.

By the way, does anyone else here know what Smac/DIABLO is?

    *sigh*

I remember my elementary school English teacher; she didn't even know if it was American or British variant that we were taught.

*hugs Tal* You'll get over it.

That would be the terrible crime of misspelling or mispronouncing words, and believing fully that your crappy way of doing so is right. Often these people will ignore corrections to such by people who know what they're talking about, believing their way to be right, and everyone else wrong.

Americans suffer this a lot :p

GOod for you, Slayer of the Coast, good for you.

    *sighs*

All this talk of English teachers reminds me of the way I gushed about the one I had... three years ago, when I had recently joined SP and has a crush the size of Russia on a short, bad-tempered bastard of a teacher who could show Snape pointers when it comes to sarcasm.

    *sighs again*

I'll go mope in the corner now.
