Okay, but where did they come up with "l33t" for a description? Does 'leet' mean something in another language, or did somebody just hit some random keys? How did it get its label?

Yeah, I just did some checking and Wikipedia has several  pages on this subject. For example:
I believe we can all agree on this:
:jawdrop: Can you believe that there are actually translation programs for this, not to mention debates on what is "true" leetspeak!?! It's unbelievable what people will waste their time and energy on.

You could just learn to read |337 - it really isn't all that hard :p

I anticipate being poor once again very soon - owing to my needing of new music and discovering a new band. But relistening to the same bunch of CDs over and over again - as good as they are - is not a terribly attractive option...

Oh boy, I'm tired today. Drove the g/f to the airport at 5am and went straight to work... I hope my boss will let me out early today.

I always have to chuckle at Sarevokā€¢'s tag-line: "MCCCXXXVII". Genius!

At it's best, |337 can be quite creative. In a way, it's a pared-down version of ASCII art, where you use a fixed-width font to make a stylised picture. The problem comes more when teenage wannabe "h4X()rz" (hackers) get their teeth into it because they think it makes them better than everyone else. In truth, it usually just exposes their complete inability to use language properly. This subset is often denoted AOLese, due to the number of them who's e-mail addresses were @aol.com, likely because they're adolescents on mummy and daddy's computer. As anyone who's attempted Diablo II multiplayer will tell you, they're generally the bane of everyone's existence. Flux (a columnist at DiabloII.net, now on seemingly permanent hiatus :( ) pretty much nailed the topic here, and goes into more detail on |337-sp34k here.

The 2nd one's a good read to get a handle on some of the basic terms. Enjoy! :)

Yeah, the soi-dissant elite of people who are above proper spelling and grammar.

At the council of Constance, a certain ecclesiastic corrected the German emperor Sigmond on Latin grammar. The latter replied, "I am the Roman Emperor and I am above grammar."

@ Ara: I sympathise. Our neighbour's freaky black cat left a dead mouse as an "offering" outside our back door.

I've been trying to sort out graduation arrangements... Nightmarish. It all seemed so simple when I thought they'd only let us have 2 guests; I could get my Mum and Dad to come along, I'd sit between them and it'd be cool. Now I get 3 tickets, and have to balance that between, Mum, Dad, my step-dad and my Dad's gf. Fantastic. And in trying to avoid playing favourites, I seem to have hurt my Mum by suggesting that I just keep it as her and Dad, with neither other half coming along. Bloody brilliant.

To paraphrase Philip Larkin, "They **** you up, your mum and dad."

The most impressive bird-killing I've ever seen was done by a 15-pound (7kg) fat cat named Brownie (who I don't have any more  ). He jumped at least three feet (1m) in the air to snag a bird flying between two trees that were 10 feet (3m) apart. He was declawed, but that didn't stop him from snapping the bird's neck with his jaws in mid-air. I was so impressed that I gave him some of the 'special' canned food that he liked so much. :)

Once when my mother was having dinner, the cat brought her a bleeding poultry liver from the kitchen...

My cat brought me a live bat. I watched her dance down the upstairs hall on her hind legs, then chase it to the nearest corner (eight foot ceilling) and launch at it. The flying rodent was still squeaking when Mask offered me her 'kill'.

    Oh, yeah:

    I hate people! And liars!

<returns to cave and rolls stone in front of hole.>

edit: goody, i'm a diamond wannabe!

My indoor-only cat once stalked a balloon. I saw her reach up and twirl her paw around the ribbon, pull the thing to the floor, and pounce/bite it until it popped. When it finally did she strutted away like, "I showed that thing who's boss..."

Cleaning sucks. As does finding out that the neighbours HUGE dog has ran off - when the cats are outside.

    *frets*

Oh well, Carolina can make mincemeat out of the mongrel.
