OMFG, I know that corn field!

Okay, like others in the world I have debts that I can't pay in a timely fashion, ie: I don't have the money to pay it all off *right*now*. I get this call:

    Me: Hello?
Woman: Does your middle name begin with *?
Me:(confused and concerned) Who is this?
Woman: Were you born in ****?
Me:(getting upset) What is this about?!

The woman tells me this is about one of my student loans, but doesn't bother telling me who she works for! :flaming: I hope that b**** had that call monitored and her supervisor(s) heard it! I know it's been a long time since I did any phone calling (telemarketing) of any kind, but isn't the first rule to identify yourself to the person you're calling? Whatever happened to some effing courtesy over the phone!? Even even-tempered hubby told me to hang up. I can say that I didn't swear at her or anything, which is an improvement for me.

Stupid telephones. Hate 'em! :grr: :nolike:

    /me casts Disintegrate on phone

:aaa: Uh-oh, there goes my intern-

Not if you're with Vodafone. Sure they don't call, but they DROWN you in SMSs about Westlife's latest single, or "Hi I'm Ricky Martin and I want you to visit my website" kind of crap. I hate Vodafone.

Completely unrelated news. I spent most of the night (morning?) at this PC until I compelted my current run-through of Torment. I remembered the game was amazing, but I think I had forgotten just how good it was. Now I'm trying to find something better than "best game ever" to bestow upon it.

I need to go back to Icewind Dale now. I think I'm on an Infinity Engine spree :)

That field is so beautiful. Hypnotic. Inviting. Makes you wanna jump in and grab those cornstalks firmly yet gently, and...

    Must look away.

I dislike phones to begin with, DotW, so having a phone I carry around with me is kinda dumb, imnsho. Cell phones are pretty ridiculous, anyway, but *that's* a story for a different thread!

Does anyone know (and is willing to tell me) if Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is still on the video store shelves? I'd hate to waste a trip down there only to find every copy's been rented. :)

    Okay, sorry for being away...
    .

Okay, so no one noticed, FINE!

I've been enjoying my new job, but something happened last night that was pretty amusing:

Another new employee and I were staffing the shop, with the 'experienced' cook just about to go home at 6pm. The new lass has got more background than I do, so she's started at 5pm and going to be covering on her own (after I leave at 7) and close at 11pm.

BACKGROUND: She's a bit of a neat nut - since it's slow and somewhat boring, she gets the opportunity to 'touch up' things you don't always get time to do. The boss and I have shown up the next morning for open only to find the walls have been washed, or the floor mats up front cleaned and drying, etc. She's even taken the grill spatula WHILST someone's using it (but put it down for a moment) and washed it off...

    Anyway:
As the cook was pulling on his jacket, the 'closer' was putting some hamburger patties we just grilled and wrapped in wax paper in the cooler, and she knocked over a pitcher of water on the top rack of the cooler. Water poured over the inside of the glass doors, and spilled over the contents of the cooler. She wailed as it happens (as we all would) and called out to the cook "No, wait - don't go!!!"

The cook in question (we're all good friends and joke around plenty) poked his head back into the kitchen, saw the situation, laughed derisively and cheerily announced "BYE!"

I proceeded to calm my co-worker down, because it's WATER! First; it's not going to leave sticky residue to be washed off, or go bad if we don't get every last drop, second; here in Newfoundland, we still have plenty of clean drinking water, and even a commercial user like a restaurant doesn't have a water meter - we just pay a flat annual 'mill rate', third; everything in the cooler (apart from the water pitchers  ) is either in a sealed container or covered with celophane - we may be a little lazy about cleaning, but we're NOT gonna serve you dried out or stale food!

I even tried to justify it with her that it got her a start on cleaning the inside of the doors! I just poured off the water collecting on the celo-covered containers into the sink, I took half a roll of paper towels and mopped up the rest, and polished up those glass doors. :) Five minutes and I was done! (she had more prep cooking to do in the meantime)

But she kept grousing over what a big screw up she'd made, despite my assurances that it was minor. Heck - I'd goofed taking an order and charged someone for TWO meals, I reimbursed the customer immediately and we didn't waste food, but it took the THREE of us about a half-hour to figure out how to void out that part of the order when it had already been rung through and closed out in the register system...

And for the past week, that's been the HIGH point of things at work - it may be boring, but I like boring :D

@apathetic I can't believe you spent all that time writing, checking that lovely message about work, but I'm sorry I didn't really care; however it did make me chuckle and for that :thumb:

Yeah, I too was a cellphone hater, a few years back. (well, actually, that was in my punk era and I pretty much hated *everything*)

But the thing I really like about mine is that if I don't feel like answering, there is a neat function called "Do Not Disturb" which, when activated (and it takes like 5 seconds to activate), sends every single voice call to the mailbox, while the phone is on. Handy when you're... eh, well, you know. Don't... want to be... disturbed. Yeah. :hahaerr:

On a different note, there is a japanese carrier supposed to launch an high-end MVNO (on Cingular's network) for the rich and the famous. For just 1500$ subscription fee, and 500$ monthly fee, you get unlimited voice and data, and an exclusive selection of phone every four months.

Hey Kuemper what about this; Don't rent that rubbish excuse of a movie that is SWIII and rent something good, like I dunno Woody Allen? Akira kurosowa? Stanley Kubrick? You know to see something that's worth your time

Errr sorry my cinema student rant. Though I still think that SWIII is like the worst SW ever made.

And, that cute Émilie talked to me and seem much more ''friendly'' toward me than the begining of the year, which is awsome.

@Ofelix - Hate Allen and Kirosawa and the only Kubrick movies I can stand are The Shining and A Clockwork Orange. But, is SW:RotS at the video store? It's too late to schlep down and rent it, so tomorrow perhaps. :)

@DotW - I hate phones period. I don't care if it sits on my desk or wall or in my pocket. The ringing makes me jump in fear. Personally, I'd not have one except it's not my phone. And don't start with the 'you can make it vibrate'. :nono: I dislike talking to people over the phone, a phobia that grows like a bad foot fungus. Answering machines and voice mail are just as bad.

@AE - I wondered where you went. Figured RL had ensnared another victim in its sticky web of decit.

For your entertainment: some cute monkeys

@DS - well, if it made you chuckle - regardless of how then mission accomplished :D

@DotW - away, drone! You will not assimiate the maralith into your Cell Collective! ;)

oh, and on the general subject:

Newfoundland sucks! It costs more to fly from here to Halifax (next door), than it does from Halifax to CALIFORNIA (across the continent), and there's only ONE ferry/day running to the mainland, so expect a day layover if you're gonna take the bus or a car...not to mention goods are more expensive on this isle due to extra shipping...

Bah Kuemper you just do whatever you want it won't cause me any grief if you watch that distasteful abonimation of nature. Oh and it'll cause you grief since you're missing the genius of Allan. However I do agree with her on phones, they are evil, very evil.

@Ofelix: Following your philosophy that phones are evil, if I am a collector, this means I am evil incarnate?
