I got sh*tfaced and slept right trhough the celebration. Another successful NYE.

 

Fireworks. The smell, the sound...

 

Both extremely unpleasant.

 

I'm of the opinion that fireworks is best experienced on the countryside. From a few kilometers away. And for maximum five minutes.

If it wasn't for my girlfriend, I'd probably have gone to bed before midnight.

 

Actually I got the best seats in the house for our city fireworks last night. We managed to push our way through the sardine packed crowd and jump and manoeuvre our way to an area people don't usually stand in. It was about 20 feet up with no railing but we stayed away from the edge. Got some great pics and cool footage.

 

I've always been thoroughly unimpressed with fireworks.

I'll take a good lightning storm over fireworks any day.

To stand near it. To feel the fire on my hands with small fire works reminding me to be more careful. To cycle in the city toward the Erasmus bridge and back afte the big show. Stopping to watch people light the stuff and see the shear joy on the faces.

It is a pity that some buy fireworks meant to be used by professionals, and use it in an unprofessional way. Or blow up stuff with illegal fireworks sold in the countries around us just to make a buck.

It is meant to be a family feast with staying up late and igniting small fireworks with the danger level of a candle or barbeque.

Some years ago the prices went up. And up, and up. One imported inportde to much and got a fire. It was located in the middle of public housing and the explosion shook the country.

Rules came, very strict rules making the price go up. And Up.

We found out that the prices in the countries around us did not go up. So started to buy that, and some some nice things that were a louder and far more dangerous.

Take the avalanche rocket used in the mountain to create controlled avalanches. Used to create avalanches is safe. Taping it to your neighbours car is not.

It got out of hand and now people are scared. Solution many say is outlawing fireworks. And with that the stuff with the danger level of a frying pan or camp-fire.

 

Yes, well, blowing **** up is retarded, but people are obsessed with fire and things that go boom.

 

Funny, huh, how some dutch buy heavy fireworks in Belgium to circumvent the laws for those too heavy fireworks, when those fireworks are actually not allowed to be used in Belgium itself. Loopholes in loopholes.

I never saw the fun in fireworks, though. It's all just a big waste of money. Though a definite marking for the passing of new years, which I otherwise would probably miss most years. Because without the fireworks I would be able to get some sleep, at least.

And I agree with Keneth. No fireworks beats a good lightning storm. Definitely not in the sound department.

 

There's also dirty thunderstorms. I'd really love to see one in person someday.

 

Static discharge in an eruption of volcanic ash? Would be nice to see, yes. But active vulcanoes are not that common and getting near one is generally not that beneficial to one's health.

I'll say I was a tad disappointed, though, when I heard there was some volcanic activity in Iceland this summer only a few weeks after we left.

 

As I said it depends on the fireworks. I've seen Naval gunfire exercises that put the New York City celebrations to shame -- and certainly rival any thunderstorm I've seen.

 

It's not like you have to be right there, unless you absolutely have to dispose of a ring.

Observing volcanic lightning from a safe distance would be just as awe-inspiring.

 

when working in logistics you have those moments of boredom. Doldrums. Leaning om the broom.

When a ship is late, the containers are late, and arrive on the same day. Wednesday was a day of absolute boredom. Followed two days later by frantic panic and stress. Those result in errors.

 

My life is the other way around—long stretches of boredom with short periods of frantic damage control.
