Why the heck is it that lately every time I try to use the bathroom at home a phone rings?
It's almost always a robocall scammer on the landline, but not always.

For that matter, I used to be able to set my old answering machine to anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute.
Now I get a fixed 20 seconds. My voicemail on the cell phone is the same.
Why are we now forced to scramble to answer the phone in 20 seconds instead of having a whole minute like we used to?

I can only imagine it was determined that callers won't wait any longer than the maximum provided with answering machines and will hang up. Why do you want to scramble to answer the phone anyway? if it's important won't anyone you care about leave a message?

Stupid lazy recruiters don't want to bother to leave a message, then e-mail me and say "I can't reach you on the phone" and even when they do if I'm in the bathroom they don't answer when I try to return it less than 2 minutes later, it goes right to voicemail.

That would explain why the phone rings every time I've either got my hands dirty when cooking or am in the middle of using the toilet.
Almost always a robocall or scammer.

If you're with someone else at a movie theater, discretely have them call your phone. They put their phone on speaker, yours on mute, and that way you can at least hear what's going on while you're in the restroom.

Not a bad idea now, but it wasn't an option as a kid in the 20th century. I didn't get a phone with enough minutes to use freely until the mid-2000's and even then it had a limited number of "rollover" minutes. Heck I didn't get a cell phone at all until 2000 when I was about to graduate community college, and that one was something my mother got me after her mother had a stroke and we had to sell her (grandma's) house and take care of her with hiring caregivers when we were at school (mom worked at a school) and there needed to be away to get in touch with one of us if something happened with grandma. The phone had no pre-paid minutes, unlimited talk was unheard of or extremely expensive, and cost more than long distance to use.

I haven't really gone to the movies much in the last decade. In fact I'm trying to recall what the last film I saw in a theater was and drawing a blank.
