I got to see France for the first time last April, also due to a company trip. Originally, it was just going to be from the airport, during a layover that would ultimately take me to England. But due to the volcano eruption in Iceland shutting down air travel, I wasn't able to fly home as scheduled. I ended up going by car from England, France, Switzerland, and ultimately Italy, to fly home out of Rome. Most of what I got to see during that trip was in the "whizzing past" category, and viewed through bleary eyes, but it was still an experience to see so much of Western Europe.

I share the office with my boss. Dammit, she says I swear too much.

I mean, what could be clearer than this:
    Code:
    <!-- WTF? -->

Got a call to sub tonight. I didn't really want to do it but she's subbed for me in the past and I owe my supervisor about 40 favours, so whatever. Piss me off.

Well, it's official: LKD is laid off. Not the kind of laid I was looking for in life. All I can think of is lots of curse words, and nobody wants to read asterisks. 4 years faithful service, no complaints about my work, the students love me . . . this is BS of the highest order. MOTHER . . . . . ER!

Damn, so sorry to hear that! *big hugs*

I'm finally 'employed' here, but I use the term loosely. When I was going through the class to earn my nursing assistant certification, we had a couple of local healthcare companies come in and talk to us, recruit us basically. The one I could work for was talking up a storm about how their Medical Staffing department was full-time, had shift differential pay, etc. I apply, get hired, and when I went in for orientation I learn that it's basically an on-call position and there's no shift differential. I've been with the company almost two weeks now and haven't had a call yet so I'm applying to the hospitals and some local nursing homes with the hopes of finding a permanent job that'll give me a regular paycheck so I can move back out on my own.

Hey, CD, long time no see.

Do you think they did a bait and switch on you or just flat out lied about their position? Pretty crappy treatment either way.

    Best of luck.

 Hey, CD, good to see you.

LKD - Sorry to hear about the job. It seems teachers are getting screwed in Canada as well as here in the USA. Maybe they plan on out-sourcing all our kids to China.

I finally quit my part-time job. I was only woking two days a week anyway. I'm going to stay at home for the rest of the year, it seems. It's back to Mr. Mom [not that it wasn't anyway]. :)

    Mindless ....

[IMG] For my current project I got two Turkish students as nominal hands (if they only used their brains, too!). Having been told by my boss on Friday (which I had off) that I need all the laws in the book, they went on to list all the laws in the book - they wrote down all the laws mentioned in the text (and that's a lot in a major legal commentar - as opposed to all the laws published in it), and it is hardly a surprise that the two of them in an entire workday didn't get all that far. Two man days lost :bang:

When I asked them how they were doing on Monday, they showed me, and answered to my "WTF??!" with their reflexive, defensive attitude: "But the boss told us that you need all the laws!" One does expect that in second grade, but not with folks in their mid to late twenties ... alas, they saved the fruit of their efforts in a folder titled, not 'List of laws published in commentary X" but, and I don't make this up: "Work for Ragusa". It aptly describes the approximate level of intellectual effort they put into it.
In publishing, for producing commentary for legal texts one usually refers to law texts already captured in the law database with a reference. In production one then directly imports if from there. By doing so one can spare the work of having to capture the same law over and over again, only because it is used in several commentaries. It avoids redundant work, and thus saves time and money.

As a result, when capturing a book as XML from print data the first time it is called for to check up on these laws, and create a list to determine whether it needs to be captured or whether it is already present. Depending on that, you get different XML documents. One of them has done this sort of work before and is, well, supposed to be, familiar with it. In all the years (three iirc) she is working with us it apparently never dawned on her that what she did served a purpose, let alone what that purpose may be. And even without that, apparently, there was no recollection of ever having done something like that left in her mind. Every day creates a brand new world. Oh, the excitement!

Glorious, just glorious. You really need to check on them on an hourly basis since they do not, ever, at least at work, engage in autonomous thinking. They're a blight on my deadlines. I get migraine just by thinking of them.

So, I was at work yesterday and there was a fire drill. Whenever the fire alarm goes off, the aircon shuts down for about 10 minutes (Obviously if there's an actual fire it stays off).

The problem was that the aircon never came back on. Within about 20 minutes the lab had spiked to about 30 celsius, or 86F (We run a lot of kit, and have no windows due to security).

By lunch, the lab was at about 33C (91F). By the time I went home, about 4 hours after lunch, the temperature was at 38C (A touch above 100F), and still rising.

Today, I have a splitting headache, my joints are very painful, and I can't take a deep breath without a dry cough as I exhale.

Simply put, I feel like ****.

[IMG] Kev is expecting a complaint at work as he wouldn't let two small children swing hammers at each others heads  the dad was furious to be told to keep an eye on his children as they can do "whatever the hell they like in B&Q"
