It'd be different if the blood were collected by force or something, as in "we killed an entire tribe of Ubbie Dubbie people to get this blood, and now it can save your child's life. Be happy!" I'd have a severe problem with the idea of my child's life being saved at the cost of the life of another human being when that human being could have lived.

But that's not the case by a long shot -- blood is voluntarily given, and despite horror stories I have never heard of a sytematic killing of people for their organs -- the donated organs are from people who died in accidents, not ones who were murdered by the state to collect their organs. Given those circumstances, there is no reason anyone should deny medical care to their children.

 

First, it *was* a long time ago...so long that I forgot that actual term used. "Tracking" sounded right at the time. I was about 12ish during this time...and it's hard for me to remember stuff from back then. As for being little, that word means nothing in my family...as reaching 6' by age 14 is common.

I stopped being "good" by age 14, and I stopped being "Mormon" by age 15...though I continued to go to church until I was 16 to shut my parents up.

 

We used to call it 'splits.'

 

That sounds like some sort of bowel problem.

 

**sigh** splits is when a missionary companionship (usually two, sometimes 3) joins forces with 2 non-missionary members and the companionship "splits" up for the evening -- each missionary taking one of the regular members. Sometimes they tract, sometimes they have teaching appointments, sometimes they render non-religious physical service (as in working at a hospital preparing surgical tools, helping out at an old folks home, or helping someone move). Since the missionaries are required to be with their assigned companion for 24/7, authorized "splits" are fabulous because even if you really get along with your companion, a break is nice.

Tracting occurs whenever any person or group of people go door to door for religious purposes (though I suppose a 'tract', an old word for pamphlet, could be a political one rather than a religious one) -- I spent a great deal of my time in Japan doing this. One's Japanese improves by leaps and bounds when one is forced to talk to people at their dorsteps.

And going back to topic, one of the best talking points that came up was when someone would say:

omae no yo na hito suki ja nai, yo! Yukketsu wa dame, desho? Sore ga bakarashii desu yo!
Translated: I don't like you sorts of people. You forbid blood transfusions, right? That's really stupid!

And then I'd say:

Chigaimasu! Ehoba no shonen de wa arimasen. Morumon kyokai no tachiba wa yukketsu ga daijobu desu yo!

Translated: We're not JWs. Our church is OK with blood transfusions.

That would get the conversational ball rolling.

I have to add something, so I just want to say that I think it's terrible that someone would refuse a blood transfusion, or look upon another as worse for doing so, based on religious grounds. On this same angle I wonder how many people who won't let their children get one/advise against it, would receive a transfusion if they needed one?

 

Blood transfusions are clearly the devil's work! Those needles are derived from a representation of Satan's horns. And blood is the same colour as the fires of hell. I think some doctors who perform those operations have 3 6s in their phone numbers.

 

WTF! that's just stupid, if my friend wanted me to deny my (right now fictional) child ANY vital treatment, then **** them!

if they are allowed to do it to their own child, then vote!
