    So, if the drops are random, I bet the best option is to wait a bit with specs. Anyway, hardly any fighter doesn't have at least WF on large swords.

    Some bastard swords are random drops and some aren't. In one of my games, I picked up one that does +d6 cold damage with every hit shortly after leaving Targos. That was totally random and made the early game so easy with my Deep Gnome Fighter - doing a rough average of 17 damage with power attack plus another 1-6 cold elemental damage. And I was able to keep my AC really high, with a shield in hand.
