Yeah I bet your slow save/load problem is because you've added a network dependency to your game. I'm running BG1TuTu and it loads in 5 seconds. I'm on a 1.8Ghz laptop.

You and my brother! He played BG1 in multiplayer so he could create uber characters! Come on! Ha ha.

BTW, speaking of old games and new machines - I installed Arcanum last night. Unfortunately when I got into combat the game went crazy - my guy ran across the screen at the speed of light and started attacking like a raving maniac. During normal play it was OK. I'll try the turn based option I guess, but I'm not getting into this game just yet. Baldurs!!!!

Also BTW - BG1TuTu has immasculated poor Minsc. Now hes an "animal master" or something and can't wear armour or use metal weapons. I'm going to rescue Dynahier and then send Minsc into battle unarmed ;)

    Felinoid and Todd -

OK, I guess I can see why saving could be slow due to multiplayer.

I looked at TuTu. There were a few reported bugs that dissuaded me, and some of the enhancements didn't match my desires.

I'm almost done. Finishing Durlags tower, the island shipwreck, then the finale and on to BG2. Wheeee!. I have a feeling I will be doing many saves and loads in Durlag's dungeons.

    kuemper -

Call me paranoid (what did you say?)

... but I believe in constant crash, thieving, and quest protection, so I must have over 100 saved games.

Think of all the pickpocketing, looting and questing opportunities in the city! I've been trying to go back and delete them, but just deleting a save takes 15 seconds or more.

I seem to remember the loads and saves even being slow from the begininng with 0 saved games.....

I thought you already said you had...
    /me double-checks
 That was Todd. See, that's what you get for hijacking. ;)
Deleting them out-of-game should go a bit quicker. Just grab the save folders of the saves you don't want anymore from your C:bad:...\Baldur's Gate\mpsave folder and dump them in the recycle bin. But only empty it after you go back into the game and check to make sure that the ones you have left are the ones you wanted to have left.

    Felinoid -

    My bad. Smack the monkey.

So is it totally safe to delete any save game directory without adversely affecting any other save games? Some games store deltas instead of the whole game state (a bad design decision in my mind). In those cases, if you delete one, then you can screw up a whole bunch.

Nope, everything's contained within the individual save folders inside of your mpsave folder. They'll have a long number followed by what you named the save.

So I've noticed Dynahier is messed up too. First Minsc the "Beast Master" now Dynahier the Sorcerer. Call me crazy but she was a wizard the last time I played! I've been storing up all these scrolls she can't learn.

Also, I'm having backward compatibility issues ;) . What ruleset am I playing? Are sorcerers Charisma based in this game? It would appear not! And my Paladin gets no spells??? I'm so confused - maybe I'm too low level still.

And DAMN Thrasher I cannot keep up with you! I played until 1AM two nights this week and you consistently dust me!!!! LOL

Now, I've never played Tutu, but from what i understand, it does change the NPCs' classes - Minsc is a beast master, Xan is a sorcerer, etc. Todd, you aren't misremembering. Dynaheir, in an unTutued game is an Invoker specialist in Evocation spells. She couldn't learn Enchantment/Charm and Conjuration spells. :)

The rule set is 2e. Paladins don't get spells in BG1. They get them at level 9, which is unattainable without an xp cap remover. Sorcerers were added in BG2 and they don't really have a stat that is the basis for their spellcasting. In PnP, it's charisma; in BG2, the game *says* it's intelligence. I can tell you that a sorcerer with a 10 Int gets his quota of spells all the way to 9th level.

Sorry for the BG2 content. Maybe this should get moved to the BG2 forum since we're talkign about TuTu? :o

    Todd -

Try uping your framerates and you should catch up to me in no time especially if you don't save or load in multiplayer mode.

I deleted all the extraneous save games. Thanks Felinoid for letting me know about the direct approach! But the only improvement is about half a Gig of free space on my drive. Still darn slow with the saves and loads. It must be the multiplayer thing.

Todd, your experience with TuTu scares me! I rely on Minsc to be a next to frontline heavy hitter..... Who knows how Ajantis, Branwen, Jahiera, and my dual-classed to Conjurer Imoen would be affected by TuTu?

Don't let TuTu scare you. Its worth it despite my complaints. It never looked this good! As far as bugs, I've only seen 2:

    1. One crash last night. The game just vanished. Luckily I had just saved.

    2. Rufie the amazing blinking mutt is nowhere to be found! Who cares though LOL

It really is a great looking game with new life in it. The NPC changes add a welcome twist. Except when Minsc says "Steel on Steel". That makes no sense since he can't use metal anymore LOL. With the Dex. Gauntlets and the +2 leather armour he now has an AC of 1 which isnt too bad. He also can wield the Composite bow (requires 18 Str in BG2 I guess!)

My reason for playing BG is the NPC interactions, multi-NPC party dynamics, and story - features that are very weak in modern RPGs. I knew going in that the graphics would be dated.

It seems that TuTu changes the core joinable NPC dynamics. I'd rather stick with what the original designers had intended. Maybe TuTu later. If I ever have the time to replay BG again....

I saw a BG mod listed somewhere that supposedly added detailed scripts to all the NPC's, replacing the basic scripts of the original game. Does anyone know about this? Were they any good? I do notice it doesn't seem to be in the Mod section at SP.

Here's something else you can try to reduce load/save times.

Go into your MPsave directory, copy the saveed game (the folder labelled as your save game), then go back into the main BG2-or-whatever directory, and open the Save folder (as in the single-player folder; if no single-player games exist on your computer, you may need to start one and save it, to force the game to create a "save" folder, or else you can just do "New Folder>save"). Once you're in the "save" folder, paste the copy of your save-game. Now, run BGTutu and choose "Single Player" instead of Multiplayer. The party from your multiplayer game should be one of your save files. Congratulations! No more of the multiplayer hassles, but you retain the advantage of player-made group!

Note: I have tried this successfully with BG1 and BG2. I have not tried it with BGTutu, but since Tutu runs on the BG2 engine, it should work fine anyway. I am unaware of any conflicts.
