SMS... dictionary??

Is just the fact that when teenagers have to write (not a SMS or in a chatroom) they keep doing it; my sister in law is a teacher and I see lots of tests with very bad gramatical erros such as writting voat instead of boat and that's sounds light because in Spanish you can see that are basical knowledge. They use 'k' instead of 'qu' or 'x' instead of 'ch'... in tests of geography or literature.
My nephew has serious writting problems causing to have bad notes in almost every subject like 70% of the students...

There is this savings bank, La Caixa, recently they advertised a new credit card for youth, so the add stated: 'because we hear you and we want to be with you we give you LKXA' all that, in SMS style...

 

I use capital letters and punctuation and whatnot. usually. I might endup using the occasional "ya" or "cuz" or "sux", buit that is most of the time out of sense of style rather than any desire to use garbage SMS "code"

 

Way to go Ofelix, you're our only hope for the new generation! Teach them the proper ways of SMS writing!

French players on battle.net do that a lot. When this happens, I just stop giving a damn and switch to English.

 

Considering that most new mobiles have predictive text enabled, I don't know why people still find the need to type gibberish. Not that I never do the same. But for it to get bad enough for someone to actually make a dictionary ...

 

Amen for 'pro-linguists'! I WORKED for Rogers Wireless - if I had to send a test SMS to a customer's phone, I used full grammar and syntax!

I've learned how to translate that 'chat speke' (that I can see since it's simultanous; you gotta rush to get your statement in before the discussion drifts away from your topic completely) and since I'm a dyslexic left-hander and type slowly, I tend to use it in chat windows.

But a) I'd almost never have a cell phone to begin with, and b) the only occasion I'd need to send a text *urgently* and save time is something like "FIRE snd fd 2 33rd & main! luv u if I die"

I'm with chev - if it's not an emergency and you can't bother to take the effort to communicate with me properly, I'm not going to take any effort to reply...though I may end up having a form letter saved...

 

Is that shorthand or sh*thand?

 

@Chev: the thing is that in Spanish, looks very awful, 'ch' and 'qu' are used in lots of words; so now, new products have names like "xicle" instead of chicle or "kesitas" instead of quesitas, the way they 'used' to be.

 

It is unfortunately not limited to battle.net I have seen many forums who use '' ke '' instead of ''que'' '' Kaméra '' instead of '' Caméra '' but the worst is '' c '' and/or '' cé '' instead of '' c'est '' Damn it's annoying.

My mother and I share the same mobile phone, I use it only when I go out this way my friend/parents can to join me. I *do* have SMS but I never use it, don't see the point to.

 

Another "favourite" of mine is "c" disappearing from before "k" in English, as in, "kik!" on battle.net instead of "kick!" when someone is lagging and other players have the option of kicking him. Or "fuk". That's outright disgusting. I'm also pretty confident that for many people who type "u" instead of "you", it's a matter of style rather than economy. After all, if someone takes the effort to use capitals and dots, maybe even commas, why not type out "you" or "are" or whatever three letter word it is?

I generally make a point of refusing to talk with anyone who purposefully makes his language bizarre. If he wants to be unique, his choice. If it's obvious the person is indeed trying to save some time (slow typers still had better avoid such a "code" as they are indeed going to learn a code rather than the proper way of typing they would learn if they spelt words right), it isn't so annoying. The same goes for grammar and syntax. Simple is good, but only so long as it is correct. Occasional mistake isn't a problem, neither are the imperfections of the language of a non-native speaker. But careless disregard for grammar and syntax or purposefully making it bizarre and incorrect is something that makes me no longer want to talk to the person, at least not anymore than business requiress. I almost feel physical pain when I see something like that.
