It seems that with Bush's veto over the Iraq funding that change is in the air, and that there will be a new funding bill quickly. It is now clear that all the recent changes by Bush was only a ploy to keep the American military that much longer in Iraq (the troop surge and a new commander). It's all political suicide for the GOP, but IMO, it could not happen to a nicer (and more worthless) bunch of guys. Bush, in his perverse wisdom, today commented:

And that would be different from the current situation...how...exactly, Mr Bush?

It seems like the Republicans are trying to hold out in Iraq at least until 2009. Hence the "surge" and the refusal to set a pullout date.

They will then set up McCain or Giuliani to lose the election badly, and leave it to the Democrats to withdraw from Iraq. The Republicans can then aim for the midterms in 2010 and for the 2012 elections by accusing the Democrats of surrendering to the terrorists.

This won't do wonders in any war on terrorism, but in politics the only battles that matter are elections.

If I were Nancy Pelosi, and we had to do a new funding bill, I'd force the bastard (Bush) to compromise. I'd say, OK, you don't want a pull out date - here's troop funding bill with a minimum wage hike. Or, here's a troop funding bill with a tax hike for the wealthy. Keep throwing stuff on his desk that will eventually force him to give in on something. Congress holds the purse strings, and if all they do is keep rubber-stamping things only Bush likes, we may as well have kept the GOP in power.

And Bush's "support the troops" ploy is getting old too. Heck, HE doesn't even support the troops. If he did he'd be pushing for more reform at Harry Reid, but no. He can't even support the troops who's lives will never be the same after serving in Iraq and coming home in pieces.

Don't you mean WALTER Reid? :p

And though I agree that adding on progressive projects like the minimum wage hike and hi-wealth taxes would certainly exercise the power of the purse, all it would do is give the right ammunition to say the left is "cynically toying with our troops lives for pork" or something equally lame. What they need to do is keep submitting the SAME bill, over and over, at least with a pullout date included, and make him continue to veto that. The whole point is to end the war, not to make Bush do what they want.
