So you cannot succeed with a non-stealthy ranger because he is not "worth using"?

Some people have strong opinions about certain builds. There's no point getting offended all the time because of the way they phrase things.

A non-stealthy ranger is basically a fighter without the fighter feats.

Oh, if rangers actually got their spells earlier, you might be able to make an argument that they could be useful even if not stealthy. But a non-stealthy ranger is giving up the very thing that makes the ranger different from the fighter starting right at level 1.

I won't say that a non-stealthy ranger couldn't "succeed". But IMHO, he really wouldn't be a "ranger"... just an oddball "fighter".

It's sort of like saying can a barbarian be a really good barbarian without using barbarian rage. I'd say no. Without barb rage, a barb is just an oddball "fighter".

It seems to me that if you are going to be playing a ranger or barb, you need to make them more than just an oddball fighter, you need to use their special abilities, whether it be stealth or barb rage, or what not.... Otherwise, the character may seem weak, and the player may end up griping that "there's nothing to commend" this class after a level or 2.
