Svyatoslav's original post is morally repugnant.

To state that 135,000 people, more or less, deserved to die, is just plain disgusting. Can he personally guarantee that every one of these people deserved to die? Would he, if necessary, kill every one of them himself? To claim the right to make such a judgment over so many human lives is to claim the right to be God. Not to say that it hasn't been done many times in the often sorry history of our race. To see it justified at such length is not pleasant.

The Russian composer Shostakovich says in his memoirs that the problem with saving humanity is that you have to begin by murdering several million people. He suggests that instead, you try doing something difficult: try saving one person. I can't improve on that.

For those who would like to know more about the
Spanish Civil War, I recommend "Homage to Catalonia", by George Orwell, a writer whose anti-Communist credentials are impeccable, although he did fight on the Republican side.

I am just learning something now that I am living here and everything I know is here . When Franco had the power, in Catalonya, was forbiden to speak in Catalunian, nowadays, Maragall, the president of the Comunitat of Catalonya, wants to be its own nation and almost forbid another language (including Spanish). There are many kinds of wars and in all of them, walking/normal people lose.
