In Finland if you have a double last name (Joki-Aho would be an example of a Finnish doubled last name) and get married, your wife would get the last name of Joki and she has to pay for a name change in order to get the name Joki-Aho. The name change costs about 90 euros. I call that just idiotic. ;)

It's just a custom. Some follow it, some don't.

In Finland, some fees are tied to how much you earn in a year. For example, speeding tickets: 10% of your annual income. Otherwise sensible and all that, but since it has NO max or min amounts... Remember those news about a speeding fee of 100,000 bucks, when that lawyer took his Lamborghini and was in a hurry to work? :shake:

At that time this was probably quite acceptable, remembering the brutal invasion program early colonists practised. This law was to make wiping out the indians a bit easier, me thinks. Of course, it's only a remnant of history now and makes me wonder a little why they haven't erased it yet...

Nothing strange about that one - Sitting in someone's crumbs or spilt drink doesn't really appeal - and smoking is disgusting. People smoking on public transport would be a sure way to get me not to use it...

Some of these may be urban legends but the ones I remember.

York. It's a legal requirement for men to go and practice their archery once a month in what is currently a car park. It's also legal to shoot (again archery) a Scotsman from the city walls.

Chester. Similar law to Anglesey with Bows, Arrows and Welshmen.

Commoners. If you are a registered "commoner" in an area and there happens to be some common land available (very rare) you are allowed to claim a patch of it if you are able to errect a chimney stack between day-break and night-fall. No idea how you become a registered commoner, but there was an old couple in the village I grew up in that got their land and house this way.

Forest of Dean. Only people born within the forest (limiting the selection to a single hospital, the Dilke) are allowed to collect wood.

Gold Mines. All gold mined in England (the UK?) is property of the crown.
