Personally, I would go with Stalker. The swashbuckler has some great bonuses, but can't backstab. I played a Stalker and really enjoyed the stealth/backstab combo - it was such a cool way of taking out mages. Plus when you are visible after the bs you have the HPs, Attacks and THAC0 to finish the job you started.

Stalker is a more capable class in every respect except pure thief abilities such as finding traps, etc. The stalker can hide in shadows and is only 1 backstab multiplier behind a pure thief....a swishy can't backstab at all. Stalker can hide in shadows, haste himself, backstab, specialize in weapons, use ranger thac0 table, racial enemy....
No comparison if you're looking for the more powerful of the two, chose a stalker.

    I agree.

The NPC thieves in the game are more than adequate at their jobs, so why create another thief? Valygar is a great charcater, but you can create a far superior Ranger yourselfand I reckon the Ranger stronghold is more fun. Choose Vampire or Demonic/Fell as your racial enemy. I usually go for Demonic/Fell.
