It's been six years since my last post, but I took BG II off the shelf recently and somehow ended up here again. Always fun (and embarassing) to read what your six-years-ago-naive-young-self wrote, even though it was just a few posts. It's an interesting mirror into one's past, one of the cons of digital storage.

    Hello again :)

I'm back after a prolonged hospital stay. At least for now. I hate my genetic makeup.

I found out the hard way that I have genetic factors that make me have a much higher chance than a normal person of getting blood clots. Normally, someone who is 35 does not have to worry about getting blood clots - deep vein thromboses (DVT) specifically. They are more common in women than men, more common among smokers, more commong among people who have heart disease and/or diabetes, and more common among the obese.

With the exception of being a former smoker (I assume it may have had some residual affects), I don't fit any of those categories, so I should be very low risk. Not only did I get a DVT - I got five of them. Five of the 14 major veins in my left leg are blocked, and my thigh swelled up like a ballon a week ago Friday, and I spent until Thursday hospitalized, on an IV drip of blood thinner 24/7.

The doctors tell me I could have died if I did not get to the ER when I did, although while I knew I was in a bad way, I did not ever think I was actually dying at any point in the hospital. It may have been cool to survive a near-death experience. (Although I suppose "surviving" and "near-death" are redundant, is if you didn't survive it wouldn't be "near death".)

The thing that sucks most of all in this - other than the obvious part that a DVT can kill you if it hits your heart of your lungs - is that there isn't anything I can do to stop this from happening again. Once the swelling goes down I can excerise my legs a bit more to keep the blood flowing a little better, but I don't lead a particularly sedentary life to begin with - when you have a two-year old, it's pretty much impossible. Although I do concede that I have a desk job, and I do have a one hour commute each way to work and back.

Still, the fact remains that I'll probably die of a heart attack or pulmonary emoblism before I'm 60, which pretty much sucks moose ****. As it stands now, I'm taking blood thinners for at least the next six months, and I'm easily the youngest person I've ever known to have done so. The doctors tell me that the DVTs may go away, or they may not. If they do go away, they may come back, and they may not. I don't have any medical training, but I think I could have come up with both of those two potential scenarios on my own.

Maybe you could have, and maybe not. Takes a lot of school to say "maybe" with a straight face, I guess.

Anyway, sorry to hear about that, as it really blows chunks.

It's always great when someone I know cheats death. Although I agree with dmc all this 'blows chunks' its a damn sight better than the alternative.

    Good to have you back.

    Hello again people.

Sorry to hear about your DVT, Aldeth. So does that mean you will be wearing stockings to work now? :)

Well, they do have those stockings that improve blood flow, but my DVT is so high that they don't make the stockings that go up that high. Even a thigh-high stocking isn't big enough, as the main blood clot I have is just above the brief line in my thigh. So no, but if it were any lower, yes.

Hello, excuse me for jumping into the middle of this conversation :D

Longtime lurker, I also hung around in #baldursgate on gamesnet/gamesurge for a few years before I fell off the face of the earth for five years (WoW, recently quit). So if there's anybody here who was in that channel at anytime...5+ years ago..... yes it's the same Arkite :)

Very sorry to hear about that DVT though Ald... it's something I was fortunate enough to see a frightening documentary on at some stage that stuck with me, so I'm conscious of remembering to move around/elevate/stretch the legs.
