The draft was, actually, brought up by two Democratic senators. It was a political ploy, nothing more.

 

Of course it was brought up by two Democratic senators; the Republicans are still laboring under the Rumsfeld doctrine of minimal troop presence that has worked so successfully in Iraq. If a Republican senator had argued for the draft before the election, he would have been drawn and quartered by his own party. That doesn't mean, however, that what Chandos calls the boys in the basement haven't been talking about it.

Really, it's simple math. Where would the US get the troops to back up any threats it's currently making or might make against Iran and North Korea, if not through the draft?

If the US is completely bogged down in Iraq, doesn't this make the US a bit of a straw tiger as far as Iran and North Korea are concerned?

And what do you think would happen if there was another large-scale attack in the US?

Much of the pro-war US public seems to think the "War on Terror" can be waged without any personal cost to themselves. Nameless soldiers (we'd best not run through the names of the dead on TV, or show images of their coffins, as this would erode our resolve!) fight for us just as their veteran's benefits are being rolled back, while we bask in patriotic feelings and stick $2 magnets on our cars. And lo and behold! the whole thing is paid for by looney-tunes laffer-curve economics, allowing us to do our parts for the war effort by spending our tax cuts on gas-guzzling SUVs, as we all know Gilded Age level discrepancies between the rich and the poor are good for the economy. Deficit, what deficit?
