[IMG] I'm thinking that the king of the eagles would have been too tempted by the ring, the same reason why Gandalf did not take the burden himself. It takes a humble person to resist the lure of the ring, and even the most humble find themselves on the verge of corruption.

Another theory ... in the worldview of the story the eagles are like angels. Kind of the "God in the Machine" tool to get the protagonists out of a jam. It wouldn't really fit the story to have the eagles deliver the ring...just like it would make God's job easier to have the churches and governments run by divine archangels. However the powers that be choose to work through the humble ones ... earthen vessels or jars of clay ...

Funny... the only fight scene I remember noticing Gimli's axe in was the battle in Balin's tomb, and I remember thinking "that's odd, a double headed axe would look better".

[IMG] In lothlorien (sp) galadriel didn't give the gifts to the fellowship. Now why this isn't important to the main story when the hobbits return home how exactly are they going to replant all the trees without the box Sam was given?

Indeed, there's a lot in Lorien that they missed out with knock on effects later on.

Legolas and Gimli have already been mentioned, but I'm thinking about Boromir. In the book, his strange behaviour begins after that scene, not on the mountain as in the film. Later on Sam and Faramir voice their suspicions about what suddenly put the ring to the front of his mind again.

Well, to answer the Gimli-axe question, he actually grabbed the axe of the dwarf beside him. And also, he carried three axes in the movie, one battle-axe and two throwing-axes.

Did anybody notice the different bows Legolas has before and after Lorien? And the different arrows he has. Cool, IMHO.

Yes, it does seem odd that Galadriel's gifts are missing. Sam's box would only be used at the end of the film, but Frodo will probably miss the star-glass much earlier on - so, if we hear hobbit voices in a dark tunnel cursing Peter Jackson, we'll know why. Less importantly, Merry and Pippin might regret not having something distinctively elven to leave on the trail...

This is a new part that was never discovered before:

Search for the Axe that was broken,
in Imladis it lives again :)

    and

The Axe that was broken has been renewed!

About the gifts: The only thing that the movie shows is Frodo getting the Phial of Geladriel in wich the light of Elbereth shone... The gifts where given though, for later you can see the green Elfen stone that Aragorn got and iirc also the others wearing a gift (in the boat where Boromir lies in you also see the girlde he got as present)

It is indeed true that Boromir in the book only in Rivendell tells that the ring should be used as gift.... after Lothlorien, the eye-contact with Geladriel, Good and bad could be awoken in everybody. In the movie Boromir also is tempted by the ring earlier... and that is not right...

Really? I missed (or forgot) that Galadriel gave Frodo the star-glass in the film. As for everything else (apart from the mallorn-seed), they aren't particularly obvious; you could get away with "well, they just had them". Maybe she'll give Sam the seed in Minas Tirith; that gets around the problem of carrying a tub of earth into hell and back.
Boromir, of course, was tempted earlier, though he wasn't so blatant before Lorien: remember Sam's words to Faramir (can't remember exactly) - in Lorien he first thought what I [Sam] saw earlier. It's a little odd that Boromir's temptation occurs on the mountain, but not too significant.

Just a thought: Galadriel was testing the party to see if they were true. It seems safe to assume that, at that stage, Boromir was pretty much on top of his temptations, otherwise Galadriel would have had a word in the ear of Aragorn (who is, after all, engaged to her granddaughter :))

Spot the Tolkien freaks... :spin:

Geladriels look didn't bring Boromir's temptations on top, but it awakened the thought in him again. But before that, everybody didn't know what way they should go. On Amon Hen, the Hill of Sight, Boromir learned that Frodo would go to Gondor, but to Mordor. He knew then the the ring wouldn't go to Gondor, else he would have waited and just bring Frodo to Gondor, however not with good intentions, however Frodo would then still have the protection of the rest.

Geladriel.... was tempted... to use the ring. It was a desire for (she having one of the 3 great elven rings) was also attracted by the ring. You see her how she would be when she would take the ring.

Turambar, not sure. I know the DVD version of the movie will be an hour longer and include some bonusses, like the friendship between Gimli and Legolas. I think the DVD will be available end Februari...

I'm not sure that everyone did know which way to go. At Parth Galen, Boromir makes it plain that he always meant to go to Minas Tirith, as it is his duty as Lord Captain. Aragorn also intended to go there, but with the loss of Gandalf, found it much harder to decide.

I think Gandalf, being loyal and loving frodo wouldn't have him let go alone to Mordor.. however how it will go.. is the best way though.

Well, I just got back from seeing LotR.
Other than 'Sweet', I'm not sure anything else does it justice.

Well, time to run down to Barnes and Noble to see if they have the three book collection or something...

Well, IMHO, Boromir 'cried' because he was ashamed. What I think happened was that Galadriel asked Boromir, "If you could return to Gondor with the Ring, and 'betray' your companions, would you do it?" Boromir knew he would, and he was ashamed of that. Well, that was the impression I got when I read the book (and saw the movie).

February? Heh, word is that the DVD won't be around 'till August :(

I don't think Boromir was only ashamed. The eye contact with Geladriel revealed good, (courage) but also evil (weakness) in everybody. After the eye-contact, the temptation Boromir had was stronger, not less... Maybe that's why Boromir disliked Geladriel, he felt uncomfortable, for it seems to him that she could see his deepsest thoughts... wich wheren't good.

I don´t think Boromir´s weakness can be stereotyped as ´evil´.
Weakness is just what is says, weakness. It has neither good or evil sides.
Boromir represents the typical human, as does Gimli for dwarves and Legolas for Elves. And the weakness of humans is often spoken off throughout the book. (for instance Isuldur taking the ring for himself instead of casting it into the mountain of Doom)
That´s so great about LOTR in a whole, some of the characters cannot be defined as good or evil. They´re a little of both, a bit grayish I would say. It adds great depth to the book.

And please, note that it´s proper spelling is Galadriel, not Geladriel.
