Not really. It was more that they are not quite as good as an archer ranger but really that is not an issue as the thief class is not designed to fight as well as a warrior. The thief is needed for his special skills and if you need a thief then an archer ranger will never do no matter how nasty at range they are. If you need a thief in stock BG2 and you want to fight at range and be the best at it the swashbuckler is the best.

I never liked how the thief was usually the worst combatant in the party. Even the unbuffed clieric was better, unless the mage had exhausted his spellbook.
Probably because I was influenced early on by The Bard's Tale where it said in the manual that "the rogue is not too shabby a fighter". Not to mention the roguelike RPG "Moria" (aka "Mines of Moria" aka "uMoria"), and of course the original Rogue, which was more like a fighter/thief.
I'm speaking of both AD&D CRPGs and P&P.

BG1 and IWD thieves usually were the worst combatants in the party. BG2 thieves are quite powerful though.

Clerics without being multi/dual classed warriors are weak without using your spells to buff. Thieves have access to a decent weapon set that includes daggers, bows, and darts which allow them to be good ranged characters. On top of that backstab allows them to remain potent surprise hitters. As long as you build a thief to stay at range and be able to backstab you should be fine.

Now if you play a priest that can use weapons that allow multiple attacks per round (or use two weapons which in PnP was not always allowed) then the priest really starts looking better.

Thats why I never use single class thieves - just too weak. If they were allowed to at least specialize in weapons, they wouldnt be so bad. Thus I always take fighter/thieves - you can make the most out of backstab, because your THAC0 is high enough to actually connect.

In BG1, an Elf Thief was very effective. with +1 to hit with L or S Swords and Bows, it helps compensate for the weaker THACO. Also, 19 Dex gave +3 to hit with Missle Weapons. They are actually quite good with shortbows.
