I'm only a little way into the game--and this may just be my own stuff--but it seems to me that TNO's quest is to find out who he is in a moral and ethical sense, and that his actual name, if any, is a minor issue. Naming things is important in all human cultures, for reasons of power and identity, and someone/something not having any name is slightly disturbing; but judging from Chris Avellone's quotes above, this seems to be exactly the developers' intention. There is a sense of shrouded power in having no name, and also a sense of uncertain identity, or identity still to be found, rather like Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name in the classic Sergio Leone westerns. As I said, I'm only a little way into it, but perhaps his name comes after the game is over.

    I'm impressed...four years old thread...
One thing, after reading ALL posts...

1)TNO was killed becouse of Morte. That was IIRC first incarnation. (Morte says so)
2)But we all know that first TNO was killed by Ravel...any comments...?

(sorry for reviving this thread again, but I just finished PS:T for the first time)

Morte says he thinks a lie he told led to one of TNO's deaths (which is why he ended up on the Pillar), but he never says it was TNO's first death. But it's not out of the question that a lie Morte told led the first incarnation to believe Ravel could solve his problem or something like that. There's no evidence either way.

"Yeah. I told an... exaggeration or two. It's just that one of my suggestions led to your death. One of them. Maybe others. I don't really know; those memories are gone, now."

Well, it wasn't exactly a lie though... Ravel did perform the magic, but as she says it was not perfect.
The name itself may not be important. However, as I interpreted the story, indirectly it has a crucial role: if learned, it would establish a link to the first incarnation of TNO, and thus serve as a mark that the circle has been completed and, in a sense, that the identity that has been lost has been restored. You will see.
