The "Land of the free" as long as you don't protest I think

I honestly couldn't care less if the penalty for those crimes was 30 years in prison, a slap on the wrist, a $5000 fine, death, or 10 lashes in a public square. As a law abiding citizen I wouldn't commit such crimes, so I am uninterested in the penalty. Now, if the penalty for speeding was death, I'd either be much more careful than I currently am with my driving speed, or try to get the law changed.

So the penalty could get them 30 years; unfortunately that's the current maximum penalty for their crimes. As I said, I would be very surprised if these nuns were given the maximum sentence, but of course there is that chance, and I'm not a judge. Apparently that journalist thinks they will. Or perhaps he/she blew things out of proportion to get a reaction such as yours; I don't know.

The point is, crimes have penalties; if the penalty is too harsh for you, then don't do the crime, or get the law changed before you do the crime.

You don't have to commit crimes in order to have a successful protest in this country, but as you've proved, you sure get a lot more publicity when you do. So, fine, go ahead and commit your crimes and get your publicity, but you won't get any sympathy from me when it comes time to pay the piper.

I seriously doubt that they will get a maximim sentence. Courts in the US rarely impose a maximim sentence.

I did find it very interesting that this was their SECOND offence:

"The nuns have crossed Colorado authorities with their protests before. In 2000, they spent six days in jail in Colorado Springs after using an open house at Peterson Air Force Base to gain access to a fighter jet. They poured blood on it, pounded it with a hammer and prayed. Charges were dropped after the Air Force said damage was minimal."

It looks like they commited the exact same crime a few years ago, and got off scott free. They will probably get off again....but I for one think that they should spend SOME jail time, and a LOT of community service time (they ARE nuns after all).

I think you'll find they've already spent 6 months in jail since the offence happened. TBH I think that's sufficient given the offences.

They refused to post bail admittedly, so you could say it's partly their own fault.

National Security? Even if they got into the damn thing (thing being the silo) you need key cards and passwords and codes just to get into the coffee room let alone launch a friggin missile.

@Blackthorne TA... sometimes the penalty for speeding is death, eh? If your driving and hit another car at 70 miles and hour, there's a chance you'll die (I know I'm just being a smart ass, but it's true).

[Heh. Sometimes the penalty for stepping out of the tub is death :) - BTA]
