Same here. Casablanca may be a shameless collection of clichés but it definitely has a mystique.

I've been so busy I've only watched one more Bond, Moonraker, now I like science fiction and star wars like any other guy but what were they thinking when they shot that movie. I know of only one Bond that is as bad as Moonraker (perhaps even worse). Anyway it's a pity because I really like Michael Lonsdale and I think he was a fantastic Bond villain.

I've just watched Yes Man, at first I tought that it was a bit like Fight Club without the violence but then there was a brawl at some point. It's a really nice feel good movie and I recommend watching it if you don't mind Jim Carey.

 

Yes Man is wonderful. I love that movie a lot - it is one of the few romcoms that I thoroughly enjoy (Jim Carrey's acting isn't over the top, although I do like his over the top stuff, and Zooey Deschanel is perfect in this).

The scene where he sings the Third Eye Blind song is amazing

 

@Saber: I don't want to give the impression that I don't like Jim Carey, I particularly like his performances in Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I like him in more dramatic parts.

I've seen Sherlock Holmes at last! It reaches a perfect balance between action and tradition. The bits in French were funny especially the "cours petit lapin" line ("run little rabbit") but the actor playing Dredger had a strong accent (probably Canadian) so I had a hard time understanding him at first.

 

Saw a couple of movies this week.

First was The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock. I'm not gonna say it was great, at some point I question why Bullock was nominated for the Oscar (did she win?), I don't mean she was bad but certainly not leaps and bounds from her previous films. But this I will say, it felt really good after watching it. Especially when I have absolutely no idea it was a true story... only found that out at the very end of the film. Obviously, I'm no NFL fan. Hehe. And ohh, Phil Collins daughter was simply lovely.

Second, Hua Mulan with Vicky Zhao Wei (Shaolin Soccer). It's a Chinese film based on the Chinese poem Ballad of Mulan. Yes, it's the same character as Disney's Mulan, only this one isn't animated. It's a so-so film for me. I'm not completely familiar with the poem so I can't say how faithful it was to it.

 

For Your Eyes Only. The music during the chase scenes is really atrocious, it's so dated. Still, it's not such a bad Bond (especially in comparison to Moonraker). Moore starts to look his age though. Charles Dance plays a part as a minor henchman. I've never noticed that before.

 

Mean Streets. Meh.

 

Sherlock Holmes (very good), Surrogates (mediocre), Ghostbusters 1-2 (great fun).

 

Hitman.

One of the few mindless action type movies that I like.

 

Case 39 - Renee Zelweger

I hate horror films and I especially hate to watch one because I thought it was a courtroom drama. But it's not as scary as I feared it would be when I realized what it was about 15 minutes into it.

 

I've seen the entire Star Wars saga this week.

I keep catching myself sounding like a lightsaber or humming the Imperial March.

 

Just saw Zombieland with Teen Snook. Thank God Mrs. Snook wasn't home she would have hated it.

 

Just watched Alien Nine. Fairly messed up, though I think people overstate that a little bit (to the point where the spoiler I had which indicated just how messed up it was ... didn't actually happen). Also, no real ending - or the ending was more like a preview for a continuation that they didn't make.

 

To Be or Not To Be (1942, not the Mel Brooks remake). Probably the funniest movie I have seen in a long time!

 

I saw Mongol, the movie about Gengis Kahn's rise to power. I was really looking foward to it... but...ah... disapointing is an under statement. The script seems like a first draft that nobody read. I mean c'mon, there's painstakingly slow sequences of him running from captors, getting captured again, running from capture, getting captured again, etc. At the same time the script has ellipses like ''he just got out of prison, he unified all of mongolia and here he is with his army''... That's the sort of thing that we, I dunno, WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE!

Saw Hudson Hawk again yesterday.

Great fun!

Saw The Guardian with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher today.

Actually really good.

I watched the Devils yesterday. Ken Russell's 1971 movie is still highly controversial but it's an impressive piece nonetheless. Oliver Reed's performance is simply incredible.
