WALL-E. Not as good the second time around.

 

The Glimmer Man with Steven Seagal! I don't know why but sometimes I get the need to watch Seagal movies. Going to look for the one where he's an ass-kicking eskimo next!

 

on deadly ground, that's one o the best seagal movies imo.

i just saw casshern which was a bit weird since i was expecting an action movie and instead got an overly-dramatic critique on the human condition

also, last night i saw big trouble in little china. good stuff. im now reminded to download "The Golden Child" as well. sigh, what happened to this action-adventure-comedy movie genre that didn't take itself too seriously yet was still enjoyable? anyone have any suggestions on movies similar to the aforementioned 2? some nights i don't feel like watching overly serious movies and just want to kick back with one of these.

 

I actually watched Casino Royale the other night as well.

I guess I like Dalton Bond. So ruthless yet fun.

 

Finished with the Matrix "trilogy". Not much to comment on the second and third movies, except that the world would be a better place without them. To quote THERE IS NO SPOON: Reloaded does not exist. It never existed. It will never exist. The same goes for Revolutions. Likewise for any animated films you might have heard of, and any other derivative products.

 

I think Daniel Craig makes an awesome Bond, can't wait until the next one. And contrary to the opinions of many, I found Quantum of Solace good, so there

For me it was The Cincinnati Kid and thought it was a great movie. Also Romancing the Stone, great stuff.

 

3-10 to Yuma (remake) with Russel Crowe It wasn't bad, will watch again, eventually.

 

Pineapple Express. It's funny at parts, but not the whole thing.

 

Tales From Earthsea. I thought it was pretty awesome. Could have used some clarification on a couple of points though. I wouldn'tve minded it being another 30mins longer.

 

At the movie house, it was Nick Cage's KNOWING. It could have been a great movie if the alien-stuff was completely out of the picture.

On DVD, JVCD with Jean-Claude Van Damme. Unexpectedly good... probably the best Van Damme movie ever. I hope this would be a good comeback for him.

Saw that last year, when I was on a Hayao Miyazaki roll. Delved into this one as well just to see how the younger Miyazaki did. I loved the twist about the true identity of Prince Arren's mysterious chasing double was revealed.

 

The Reader. It was alittle too much at the start (too much nudity, too much sex, I was starting to ponder what exactly the film was about) but the story picked up very nicely half way through and it was really good at the end. Not sure if Kate Winslet really deserved the Oscar though, but then again, I didn't see the movies of the other nominees. On the other hand, David Kross was phenomenal as the young Michael and I was surprised he didn't get any awards.

 

Just finished watching the Bourne trilogy. Good stuff. I had previously only seen Supremacy. It was good to see that the other movies were as good. Great action thrillers all of them.

what other animated movies of the same type would you recommend? Especially something similar to Tales. So far I've also seen Princess Mononoke and already have (but have yet to see) Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away. Bear in mind I'm interested more in a swords-and-sorcery fantasy element as opposed to the whole post-apocalyptic/technical type movie like Akira or Fist of the North Star.

Also, saw Mortal Kombat for the first time since it originally came out. Actually not all that bad for a 90's VG-to-movie adaptation. I also just rewatched "So I Married an Axe Murderer" for the first time since I don't know when and it was just as good as I remembered, along with having one of the best movie soundtracks for 90's alternative rock and Hamlet 2 which was HILARIOUS. Also around halfway through Arrested Development's 1st season.

 

Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away are both beyond excellent (so is Princess Mononoke, but you've seen this one). Neither is exactly "sword and sorcery", in fact Castle in the Sky is almost fantasy-steampunk (think of a lighter Arcanum - at least it's light until the last half hour or so...).

If you're looking for a good sword and sourcery series (not movie), Slayers is very entertaining. It's nowhere as good as Miyazaki's stuff, but it's the best sword and sorcery series I've seen. It's nominally a comedy series, but it's got good plot and characterisation. There are 3 series that act as sequels and a half dozen movies with the same main character as well.

Well, not too many good 'sword-n'-sorcery' type of animated movies I can really think of (Save for Mononoke). Well... there IS Ninja Scroll... but if it actually is a good movie or not is debatable (its a guilty pleasure at least).

You'd have better luck with series like Ziad says (Record of Lodoss War, Basilisk, Claymore, Le Chevalier d'Eon etc.)

I guess I'm not too good with classifying genres, I don't really need it to be "swords and sorcery" but more of something with an "epic" kind of feel yet not depressing (Akira, Fist of the North Star). I forgot to say I've also already seen Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind as well. Afraid that I'm not really looking to get into a series and would rather get one-shot feature-length film recommendations or maybe a trilogy-type thing.

Plan to see Howl's Moving Castle today.

 

I would have suggested Ghost in the Shell, but if you're not in the mood for something non-epic and depressing that may not be the best one.

Unfortunately I cannot think of a single movie (other than those you've already mentioned) that fits what you're looking for and are not part of a series...

 

Ooo, ooo, Ghost in the Shell is my all time favourite.

Epic feel eh? I don't really consider Akira an epic show. Its more like cyberpunk thriller more in the vein of Ghost in the Shell. Haven't watched Fist of the North Star though. I guess you can try both the new Appleseed movies, similar to Akira and Ghost in the Shell (based on material by the same author) but not depressing and more an action film.

Well, I guess something sorta epic-ish and not depressing would be Ah! My Goddess the movie. Or Steamboy (well, its steampunk and its made by the same person who made Akira but its a lot lighter in note and is more of an adventure film). Vampire Hunter D is sorta sword and sorcery but its skewed alittle to the depressing side.

 

I've seen both Ghost in the Shell and Innocence already. Also saw Appleseed the other month and have part 2 downloading now Also seen Vampire Hunter D already and just finished downloading Steamboy yesterday lol.

Will try and look for oh! my goddess though. What if we remove the "depressing" restriction, you guys have any other recommendations?

Just saw Howl's Moving Castle too. Found some stuff a bit "meh" but overall I thought it was really good. Preferred Tales from Earthsea though (don't flame me )
