Well, Howl's moving castle was pretty meh. I didn't really like it that much. I have yet to see Tales though.

Well, I guess it depends on your definition of epic though (adventure & action?). Jin-Roh is excellent, as are the two Patlabor movies and Perfect Blue (uber-depressing). But I don't really consider these epics.

Millenium Actress, I would consider it as an epic in storytelling and would highly recommend to anyone (not an action movie though but sort of an adventure movie in a sense).

I'd definitely recommend Tales. Thanks for the tips Faye, soon as I free up some space on my hard drive, I'll try and pick up those movies. Maybe not Perfect Blue though, I have enough depressing stuff I haven't gone through yet lol. Have you heard anything about "Paprika"? I just got it but haven't seen it yet, imdb says its supposed to be good though.

I just saw Infernal Affairs and it is VASTLY superior to the imho overrated "The Departed". The only edge the latter had was a more well developed "love triangle" thing going on. Ending of the original was more realistic too.

Also, just rewatched <ahem> Transformers: The Movie for the first time since late 80's-early 90's. My buddy and I were choking with laughter on the opening lines of the narration: "It is the year 2005..." LMAO :shake:

Totally awesome movie though and it brought to my attention that my friend never saw "GI Joe the movie" and "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" either and so I now have to find those.

Enag. Go watch GI Joe: Resolute. It's available legally online on adult swim...oh, wait, you're not in America. So in that case it should be on Youtube.

Just. Go. Watch. It. Look, the tagline on the adult swim site was 'I guess Joe's resolution was to kill lots more people'.

Hayao Miyazaki is actually more kid or teen oriented, although some of his later work appeals to adult as well (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle). Although non-epic, Spirited Away is just too good to pass up. It's actually my favorite in the anime/cartoon genre. Didn't really appreciate Howl's either but it is still a good one, prefered "...Earthsea" over it. If you're on a really light mood or trying to impress some pre-teens, My Neighbour Totomo is a great choice. Loved that cat-bus. :D

I don't really have any epic-type of anime movies that I can recommend, not exactly a fan. I've really only seen Miyazaki and Masamune Shirow's (Ghost In The Shell and Appleseed) works. And am too lazy to watch all those series with over dozens of episodes. Btw, Appleseed 2 is very John Woo style. I loved the rendering and effects in this one but the first one had a better storyline. A little trivia, Miuccia Prada (yup that Italian fashion designer) was so impressed with the first one that she actually designed a couple of dress for the protagonist in the sequel.

But anime-type live action swords play or epic-like. Try the South Korean Shadowless Sword, Sword In The Moon and The Restless or the Japanese Azumi 1 & 2 (I'm sure you've heard of this one) and Shinobi:Hears Under Blade. Shinobi is like X-Men from periodic Japan, quite interesting and very exiting effects.

Have you checked out Grave of the Fireflies? It has both an anime and a live version. Not exactly sword and sorcery nor epic-like but definitely worth watching. I'm sure you guys have seen movies of how WWII affected the Jews and the allied nations, this one is about how it affected the Japanese citizens. This one's a tissue-movie... depressing type.

As for recently seen, it's not exactly a movie but I just got the DVD. Jeff Dunham's Insanity. If you're not familiar, he is the ventriloquist with that Achmed that dead terrorist that you probably saw in YouTube. The guy is a comedy genius!!!

Paprika was directed by the same guy who directed Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress. It was good, but his weakest work I've seen so far (although that is due to the high benchmark his other movies set. In no way Paprika is bad, its just overshadowed by his previous works). I would still recommend it.

And yeah, I definitely agree. Infernal Affairs is way better than Departed really. I thought Departed was waayyy overrated (not to mention at the Oscars, they said it was based on a Japanese movie... quite an insult really)

    @Nior
Thats probably cause the second Appleseed was produced by John Woo, lol. And Shinobi: Heart under blade was based on the same novel as Ninja Scrolls (and the series Basilisk).

I'm surprised to know that they says that The Departed was based on a Japanese film in the Oscars. I'm also with you guys regarding how it pales in comparison with Infernal Affairs. Having seen and own the IA trilogy, I highly recommend you guys watching the other 2. Part 2 was the prequel, centering on the 2 actors who played their respective young counterparts. Part 3 was a bit complicated due to new characters and lots of flashbacks. Which would become your favorite? My guess is it's gonna be a toss between the first and the third.

    @Faye,
Hehe... yup, I was aware that Appleseed 2 was produced by Woo. But having the 2 disks DVD, it's actually Aramaki (dir.) and his crew who made it Woo-style. It even surprised Woo himself when they were showing him the unfinished film. But of course, Woo also had some inputs.

And thanks for the info about Shinobi and Ninja Scrolls. I knew Shinobi was based on a Japanese novel or manga but never did knew what it was.

Got hold of a bunch of DVDs lately so I've been watching my way through them starting with Secondhand Lions (really good!), Casino Royale (didn't think it was that great) and Shooter (not bad, kinda like the poor man's Bourne).

Just watched the Bank Job last night. Not bad; it was pretty entertaining (and I like Jason Statham in pretty much everything).

So Wolverine was pretty bad. The action scenes were alright; several of them were so over the top that I was laughing, which...well, hey, I got in for free, so that was fine with me. However, everything that wasn't an action scene? Yeah. Epic fail.

We went and saw Wolverine on Sunday. It wasn't as bad as AMaster makes it sound. I rather enjoyed the story line, and Wolverine's history. While I liked X-Men as a kid, I never read the comics, nor watched the cartoon on a regular basis, so there is a lot I don't know about the series. For example, I never knew Wolverine and Sabertooth were brothers...I knew they were archenemies, but that was it. This movie answered a lot of questions.

Heehee, thats hollywood for you, take a perfectly good story and change it up.
Chris claremont, the co-creator(along with john byrne) of sabertooth, originally intended sabertooth to be logans father!
Too many trips to the comic book shop with my little brother:p.

Went to see Wolverine on Sunday. It was ok, but it was a bit of a disappointment.

6.9 on imdb. 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. 44 from the critics, 5.9 from the users on Metacritic.

You were okay with the screaming at the sky? The miniLogan running screaming with claws extended? The creation myth that we were supposed to take seriously? The parallels between the myth and what went on in the movie? The dialogue ("You wanted the animal. You got him.")? The 'leaning into the wind' action scene (you know what I'm talking about)? And so on. You were okay with all that?

1st) Thanks for the spoilers guys

2nd) Brothers, faugh! I say, faugh!

Thank God I stopped reading most comics when I hit high school. Wolverine used to be the coolest ever and there was a reason for this: NEVER REVEAL THE WHOLE PAST. Give enough spy stories and ninja stories to keep us interested but for God's sake don't do an in-depth "I was a rich Canadian boy with family issues when I was a kid" thing :/

Saw Clue again for the first time in a while the other night and Baby Mama last night.

What spoilers? Brothers? First five minutes. MiniLogan? Same. Screaming at the sky...who, when, what context, etc. That there's a creation myth at some point in the film that has symbolic importance? That there's a fight in which...well, whatever you're envisioning based upon my description, I guarantee you're not coming close.

But, yeah. Extremely minor spoilers. Trust me ;)

Still waiting to see the movie but the plot outlines that I've heard tie in to what I've heard of Wolverine's origins per the comic books. I don't read them but I remember hearing the movie's story at least five years ago and I don't think it was new at the time. That's not to say the comic books followed the original Sabretooth creators' vision of course, I presume some later writer came along and came up with his own story when he needed to. Just saying I don't think Hollywood messed this up, I think they are following comic canon.

I thought the movie did a pretty good job adapting the comic book to the big screen. Many of the things you dislike AMaster are taken straight out of the comic. All in all I found it to be a pretty good Marvel movie even though I agree that completely revealing his past detracts from the character.

As for Sabretooth, in the Origin comic he is not really touched upon. The character that in the movie is Sabretooth is pretty much there but it is never shown with any power but his appereance is very Sabretooth like. I actually think the movie version of him is pretty good.

'the comic'? Dude, there've been thirty years of Wolverine stories at this point. Which comics?
