District 9. Fun movie! In its way unique. I recommend it.

 

Ran is one of my favourite films. Awesome soundtrack too.

I watched Dodgeball over the weekend. Yeah I know, not quite Kurosawa Entertaining nonetheless. Ben Stiller, who I usually don't like, was hilarious. He does over-the-top crazy far, far better than the bumbling idiot he's usually cast as. David Hasselhoff, William Shatner and Lance Armstrong (!) in cameos were great too. Shatner's speech pattern is always fun... to hear!

 

Valkyrie, though I already knew the story, it kept me captivated throughout, thumbs up!

 

Despite the lack of German accents?

 

Yep, that and the lack of acting by Tom Cruise, he is getting worse with age. The story was the best part, anybody could of replaced Cruise and the film would of been just as good.

 

Seen several new ones in the last few days, so here goes.

Saw Harry Potter 6 last night with the missus. Good overall and visually interesting, but by far my least favorite of the series. Overall pretty boring.

Day before that, we saw Watchmen. I was a bit distracted so I didn't catch it all, so I'm going to watch it again, but overall very cool. The concept is very inventive comic-book wise, so I can see the cult appeal. Will rewatch again this week.

Day before that, Sunshine Cleaning. Billed as a comedy. Not really a comedy. Dark, sure - and there were certainly parts that had me laughing. But it's more a sober family drama and gritty character study than the omg she saw blood and just puked on that dude comedy it's billed as. Recommended, if a bit of a bummer.

And last but not least, HELVETICA. A documentary about the world's most widely used and versatile typeface. This one is pure nerd-alert for me, since I'm a graphic designer and type nerd, and this is the kind of rare film that validates the aesthetic beauty and cultural importance of my oft-misunderstood profession. But the film could easily have a secondary title of "WHY GRAPHIC DESIGN IS REALLY PRETTY DAMN COOL," and is told in an interview style that helps it hold interest for laymen. HIGHLY recommended.

 

Inglorious Bastards - the marketing has done this movie a disservice. I was expecting, like, Tarantino plus ultraviolent violence porn/revenge fantasy. Well, no, it isn't that. It's much better than that.

Anyway, very uncomfortable and very good.

 

Grave of the Fireflies, a Japanese film. I saw the live action one, the one made by NTV not the 2008 version. Quite a powerful film. It's about the flight of children during the downfall of Japan in WWII. Pretty depressing but brilliant acting.

Hmmm, I don't know about you but I sort of enjoyed those chick flicks of the 80's and early 90's.

 

Seven Samurai - good movie, but severely overrated. And it makes me wonder if Mifune can only play one character...

Nosferatu - a bit creepy (Max Schreck is freaky!), but overall disappointing, considering they completely gutted the book.

 

Have you seen Shadow of the Vampire, with John Malkovich and Wille Dafoe? It's a fiction "what if" take on Nosferatu, where Max Schreck actually is a vampire.

 

No, but I'll check it out - sounds interesting! And it has a great cast as well.

 

I haven't seen the live-action ones, though have been planning to for a while. Have you seen the original animated one? Being animation made it more depressing. When I then found out it was based on the writer's own childhood in WW2... the only thing he actually changed is the very end.

 

Direct Contact. Action movie with Dolph Lundgren. Wasn`t too bad.

 

American History X, first time I saw it.

 

Ugetsu Monogatari by Kenji Mizoguchi... is was a good film, but it had the potential to be one of the best films of all time - it just needed a bit more character/plot development.

 

@Ziad, sadly, I haven't seen the animated feature yet. And yes, I did heard that it was a semi-autobiography of the author and the novel serves as his personal apology to his sister. This version was told from the point of view of the two kids' cousin.

 

I saw Aachi and Ssipak the other night. Very strange movie. I didnt laugh at anything, and I was not surprised that it was full of disrespect for homosexuals, such as calling them freaks and all that. The movie pays homage to a lot of other movies, and this is apparent throughout. Seems also that at least 6-10 'people' die every minute on average, often in the most bloody way possible. Im not sure quite what to make of it all...was it political satire? I dont know...very strange movie.

 

Finally saw Wolverine. It kicked butt. Not the world's most intellectual or profound film, but awesome nonetheless.

 

Just watched Dead Snow last night, is very funny in places
