    DarkStrider has got it. When I first saw the film (many, many years ago) it was on Fox and they brutally edited it for content and that scene, along with a lot of the better scenes, was completely cut. The final fight made no sense at all and when I finally saw the uncut version and I saw this scene my reaction was Woah, Cool!

    I thought that this was a little too obscure to be the answer. Lady Snowblood (1 and 2) are a Japenese revenge story. A little like an anime movie or a little like "Kill Bill". A woman is wrongly sent to prison. There she has a baby (from one of the guards) to be her revenge and dies giving birth. The baby is fated to grow up and get revenge for her mother. This is a cultural thing, and being Western, I do not fully understand how this is supposed to work. Anyway it was a good story and a good movie.
