    It also happened in Silence of the Lambs and nearly every other crime movie (especially since all the master criminals seem to be madmen). A bit more detail would be appreciated.

    Okay; I'm home from work now. You're on the wrong track/genre of movie...again due to my obtuseness. :(

    Here's some more detail that I hope does not make it TOO easy:

    The movie is a retelling of a very famous story, told from the persepective of our two protagonists, who are very minor characters in the original.

    Two men are arguing. One pulls out a gun. The small daughter of the unarmed man runs out to her father -- to act as his shield. She succeeds. The gun fires as she jumps into the arms of her father.

    No, this movie is considerably more recent. Actually, the scene of the anguished father holding his daughter was on a poster for the movie.
