    I don't recognise the quote(or don't remember it) so I will take a guess, but I have to reason my way through this...

    Your use of "Debut" indicates he has directed more films since then which implies that he had some success as a director. Your hint also makes clear that this was an acotr turned director rahter than the reverse. Therefore Clint Eastwood is out since in Play Misty For Me, he played the lead(not a "subordinate character"). Jack Nicholson is out because The Two Jakes bombed critically and financially and I don't think he has directed since.
    IIRC, Ron Howard's directing debut was with Splash which he did not star in. Same with Sean Penn and The Pledge(which was also not a success finanacially).
    I don't think Mel Gibson ever played a "subordinate character" in any film he has been in(especially ones he has directed).


    Man, this is hard!

    Must think longer...


    Edit: I am thinking the director/actor in question must be someone like Warren Beatty or Robert Redford. I have no idea which films marked the directorial debuts of these men but the line sounds like it could have come from Butch Cassidy... or even Heaven Can Wait(which I don't recall Beatty directing but my memory is crap anyway).

    Nice try, but none of your suggestions are correct. I won't say if your chain of reasoning is 'on track' because I think it's too soon for another hint. I think there are some time zones and what not to consider too - some of the usual competitors could be sleeping now :sleep:

    I think that was in the Confessions of a Dangerous Mind movie, but I don't remember who directed it and I don't remember who said it, and I certainly don't remember if those two people were one and the same, so I am probably wrong.

    I thought that it was from Animal House and I wasn't feeling tired so I decided to watch the film again to check. Sure enough there it was. :thumb:
