Things we'd like to see in the expansion

How much experience do you *WANT* for a game in 3E? A level 20 character in 3E has 190,000 experience. A thief in 2E, which is the fastest leveling class, would only be level 10 with that amount of experience. By the time said 2E thief hit level 20, he'd have ten times the experience of any random level 20 3E character.

You get less experience in NWN than in BG2 because you *NEED* less experience. I mean, wanting 100,000 experience for a single fight? That's ridiculous.

It's not the numbers that matter, it's the amount of work it takes to reach your goals. The numbers are just a way to keep score.

I do agree that they should fix the varying challenge ratings for different classes. And the way experience is boosted or reduced based on average party level needs a close look as well. It's dumb to get *MORE* experience by having an extra companion tagging along, no matter how wimpy that companion may be.

Killing an incredibly difficult enemy (and they don't come much more difficult than Klauth) should be heralded by a whopping great experience gain. I got 513 XP for Klauth which was the same as I got earlier in the game for killing a dwarf under the Green Griffon and several other enemies. The fight with Klauth was a nightmare to win and I ended up having to use the recall stone half a dozen times before I finally got him and even with the recall stone it was a pretty close thing. By comparison, the fight with the dwarf was easy: me and Grimgnaw surrounded him and pounded him into the ground. He might have got a hit or two in but there was never any real sense that I might lose the fight and I never came close to having to use the recall stone to get out of there.

So under 3E rules we have these two fights (one incredibly difficult and another hardly even challenging) that each give you the same amount of experience. Somehow that just doesn't seem right. Under 2E rules, the dwarf would have been worth 10,000 XP and Klauth 100,000 and you'd have felt a sense of great achievement upon receiving a bonus of that size. Receiving 513 XP just isn't the same.

The 3E XP rules are just lame through and through. I'm hoping one of the techno wizards who frequent this forum will come up with a way to change the XP system back to the superior 2E rules (hint! hint!)

NWN doesn't use the 3E XP rules as from the book. So complain about the game, not the system :p

Whatever. The 3E XP rules from both NWN and the rulebooks suck. Go back to 2E. It was a damn sight more interesting. Killing a fearsome enemy actually meant something back then.

For me, killing Klauth with all the equipment I had at that time was a walk in the park. When I ran across that dwarf, he killed me. So which one should give me more experience?

Experience points, and how many you get are mainly irrelevant IMO. That you triumphed over the obstacles in the way of your goals is what is important. As long as you are challenged, and are improving the capabilities of your character, what difference does an absolute number for experience make?

Would you be happy if they multiplied the experience tables by 1,000,000 so that you'd progress in levels just as fast, but you would have gotten 500,000,000 XP for killing Klauth?

Well... that would mean much only with newly created characters, but what I've been thinking of recently is traits, like in Fallout (2). Something for something. You get one specific quality for one specific flaw. Those who do roleplay actually like flaws as they add to gaming fun. Some more specialised traits would also be welcome. I'd like for example a very cynical wit for my paladin, my brother prefers a more direct approach for his thug.. pardon, rogue.. etc etc. Some more components for character's looks maybe. What I'm also longing for is kits. Kits like in 2e, not just profiles. Certainly there are more things I'd be pleased to see in expansions, especially that probably I won't start playing NWN actually before the expansions show up mainly due to the lack of time.

Well, unlike most of the above comments, I think the game rocks!!! 3 ed rules and all.

The graphics are unreal. They take d+d too another dimension. I tried replaying BG2 recently and the engine sucks in comparison to NWN. I love the game. (Really, I'm not a Bioware employee)

Sure there are small gripes. But it's like any new system. You get used it.

What I'd really like to see is a series of expansion games. Not two. Kind of like the modules you can pick up at the website - only bigger. I think the engine and system works. It doesn't need an NWN2 in however many years time (I for one am not upgrading the computer again). Just a number of expansion games. They don't have to be tied into each other. I just want to play more. I don't have the web connection for online gaming, and the modules at Bioware are pretty good but would be better if they were larger scale, more epic - ie, on cd's. I see it like a book series. I've got the NWN engine - now give me a series of solo games...

I'd like the game to look a little more colourful. BG had some nice colourful locations, NWN just seems to be pretty bland.

Hey dshadow I agree with you about the whole graphics and gameplay thing. They didn't seem to pay much attention to details such as a good story and cinematics. I think the in game movies and story were the best part of the original Baldur's gate. They were the things that have made that game my favorite to this day. And they simply didn't have alot of movies in NWN.
That made the experience not seem as real to me. And YES, again I agree completely. All the areas in NWN do seem to be so unoriginal and square.. Almost like everyghing was made of stacked bricks.
I think the expansion will rate much lower than the original in magazines like Pc gamer and stuff.

My previous post was written in the middle of chapter 1. Now I'd just say that I'd want a decent story in the expansion game.

HAve hit the middle of chapter 2 and am bored BORED bored. It's just the same thing as chapter 1?????? This story must have been written by committee.

"Story" and "Neverwinter Nights" are words I never thought I'd see in the same thread!

Here's hoping the expansion has a storyline. I know it's a bit much to ask considering that it takes time to create a storyline but the designers managed it fine with BG 1 & 2.
