If what you're mainly concerned about is sharing your DSL connection, you can accomplish that with a cable/DSL router, or if you have an old junker PC you can install Linux and have it be your router using IP masquerade. The latter solution is obviously the more complicated of the two, and I don't know if it's a perfect solution but I do that and have no complaints.

The price for a cable/DSL router was comparable to the upgrade version of XP that I've seen.

I know you can do a dual boot, with 2 partitions, Win98 AND Win 200 on your computer. So when one OS doesn't work you can go to the other OS. I suppose this is also optional for Windows XP. Use Win98 for gaming and programs that are not working on WinXP.... use the more stable Windows 2000 or Windows XP for browsing, listening to music, etc, with less crashes. I suppose this is the solution, however you still have to choose between 2000 and XP.

Your topic subkect riminds me of something funny:

Socrates: To do is to be.
Shakespear: To be is to do
Sinatra: Do be do be do.

Mollusken: Tools|Folder Options|View, uncheck 'Use simple file sharing'. This makes the filesharing look just like it does in Win2000.

    Mirkwood: What is Lunix? :p

Silverblade: Win9x are based on old MS-DOS, lacking all kinds of decent memory management a real OS nowadays should have. WinNT based OSes on the other hand has this, as a consequence of this, they are way more stable, and don't require you to reboot after a program has crashed.

Extremist: XP is just a name. It's more like a big revision of Win2000. And it really is impressive to look at what M$ has managed to do with it. And there are no more restrictions than there were in earlier versions.

Taluntain: Looks like I might have been wrong about the ICS issue. Seems Win2000 supports broadband too. I only based my previous statements on what a friend in the tech support business told me. Should have checked better :p Oh, and if you're going for dual-boot, remember to place the OSes on different partitions, or they'll really screw your program files directory :p
I'd personally recommend a singleboot WinXP anyway, as you don't really need any other OS.
Only complaint I have about WinXP this far is the Soundblaster Live, and its lack of decent drivers. But those are even worse in Win2k anyway. :p

Edit: Throwing two :) for variety's sake. :)

I do not have any problems with my Soundblaster Live in Win2k, to sort that out. And I feel that the just the thing that Windows XP warns me to not share my folders because my files can get in the wrong hands is a good reason not to use it. It's also way more buggier than Windows 2000. For routing, just put two network cards in your machine and use one of them for the connection and the other for you network.

[IMG] Headbanger, I was making a "To Be or Not To Be?" parody. ;)

OK, since I expect to have this install for a while now, I'll just go for XP to stay on top of things. I hate having multiple OSs installed, so I won't have anything else. And because XP is already running on the other computer...

A question for anyone in the know... I currently have one external ISDN modem on my computer which the other computer on the network would use to connect to the Internet. Do I need to have my computer turned on for it to be able to use the modem? (This goes for the ADSL modem I'll get later as well.)

Also, how to get rid of the current Windows install on C:? I'll keep a backup copy on my other drive if I happen to need something from there, but I want to delete everything on C: to install XP there anew. Is there another solution than booting to DOS and deleting it all there? Since you obviously can't delete from Windows itself and there's no Uninstall Windows button. :D

How the hell do you get rid of XP then, when you're left with no DOS to boot into? I never really asked myself any of these questions since I don't have a habit of making new Windows installs at all...

If you are using your computer as the router (meaning only your computer is directly connected to the modem while the other computer(s) are connected to yours either directly or through an Ethernet hub) then yes, your computer has to be on, though I'd guess you don't necessarily have to be logged on.

I don't know about Windows OSs, but I have a Linux computer that serves as my router and firewall and I leave it on all the time, but I don't have to be logged on. I don't know if you can do this with the new Windows OSs though.

If you bought a router then you could hook up your modem and your computers to the router and would only have to leave the router and modem powered on.

A lot of this is assuming you connect to your modem via Ethernet; I don't know how ISDN works, but my DSL and cable modems both had Ethernet connections to the computer.

ISDN modem is on USB... And I only have a Ethernet connection between two computers. No router.

[IMG] I use a hub to connect my two computers to my external cable modem. The modem is connected directly to the hub and the two puters to the hub. They are also have file and printer sharing enabled. I dont have to have either computer on for the other one to access the internet. But of course in order to file share both puters must be on and logged in. The hub is a wonderful toy

Tal, just use fdisk and there will be no more files on your HD... then reboot with the XP cd.

Indeed use a hub or switch, that's the best solution for sharing one connection with two computers.

Mollusken: What exactly are the bugs you've encountered in WinXP? Just curious... And the Win2k drivers certainly have problems. Sky high CPU drain. As much as 30% in DirectSound3D. Many users have reported system instability and noise with them too. Oh, and there's just as big a chance that your files get into the wrong hands with Win2k, it just doesn't warn you about it, so I don't see how that is relevant.

Tal: Check with your ISP before deciding whether to use a hub or a router/NAT software. He might be an ass, and charge you double for the extra IP you'll use when both PCs are connected via a hub. In that case you'll have to choose between a router or a NAT application (ICS, SyGate, etc). The best solution is of course if you can use a hub, as you won't have any of the port problems I am experiencing over my NAT connection, and all your PCs will have different external IP addresses. But if your ISP decides to be an ass about it, get a router if you can afford it, as you won't have to depend on the machine being connected to the internet to be turned on. But if you're a poor student like me and can't afford any better, ICS is the solution. :p
Oh, and just boot from the windows xp cd. It will give you options to fdisk and format as much as you desire. An advice though, if you're not planning on going back to 9x architecture, use NTFS on your new system partition, much better, with greatly reduced risk of corrupted files in case of a system crash. You have the ability to allow or deny access to your files on a per user basis too, a nice feature in my opinion, especially if you want to keep that adult content away from prying eyes *nudge* *nudge* ;)

Whoa, wait a minute. You can't just use an Ethernet switch or hub unless your modem can act as a router, or your ISP gives you an IP address for each of your computers. I know that multiple IP addresses wasn't a possibility for me on DSL unless I paid extra. You can't have two computers that use the same IP address on at the same time.

With a router, it will take the "fake" IP address assigned to each each computer and replace it with the "real" IP address recognized on the net, thus sharing the IP address.

Newer Windows OSs also do this, but the one providing the IP address conversion must be on in order to do it.

One last thing; there is no reason to buy a more expensive switch over a hub unless you're planning to run different speeds of Ethernet at the same time.

    [Whoops - didn't see Azardu's or Tal's replys while I wrote this]

If your DSL modem connects only with USB like your ISDN, then I'm not sure you can use a router or hub solution; I don't know if any modern routers or hubs provide USB connections.

ICS does what you suggest... I'll still use only one IP.

I need to know if you can actually dial out with a modem using ICS (over the computer without the modem), or can you only share an already running connection?

IIRC, yes you can. My folks had a network that I set up for them, and they only had dialup for their internet connection. I experimented to see if trying to connect via the computer without the modem would actually get the other computer to dial for the connection, and as I recall it worked fine.

I don't remember which operating system it was (98SE or ME), but it had ICS (or something similar) and actually let you install it on the old computer that didn't have it.

Right. I've read about in on MS Knowledge Base... All OSs from 98 SE on have ICS as an option. And you only need to have ICS set on the host computer (the one with the modem). You set it up there and then it creates the setup and copies it to a diskette to install on the other computer.

    Thanks for the help.

I never have even used anything but win95 and 98 and they have served me perfectly well but maybe I should get something newer...

Wow. ICS creates a setup disk? Then why did I set it up manually? :p I think it's possible to set a computer to connect to the Internet whenever needed, although I'm not sure how well it works. (Last time I tried, it went online whenever I tried to connect to a shared folder as well, a rather nasty unwanted effect on the phonebill :p ).

Extremist: Out of curiousity, what OS do you use?
