Planescape: Torment - PC CRPG

Baldur's Gate & Baldur's Gate II - Both PC CRPG

Daggerfall - PC CRPG - Elite for the 90's. Not easy to get hold of, but then many good things aren't. And the best skill system I've used in a game.

CM00/01 - PC Football Management - One version of CM3 (Championship Manager) here, have played it more than any other title, it is adictive, has depth, and you never quite know what will happen.

Morrowind - PC CRPG - A bit on the small side, and dialogue requires a little imagination, but a superbly created world to explore.

Colin McCrae 2 - PC Rallying - Still looks good after all these years, and still handles as though it wants to entertain. Interesting tracks.

TOCA 2 - PC Racing - Pick of the track racing games, chance to have some very exciting races (especially at full distance).

Giants: Citizen Kabuto - PC ? - The first two sections are absolutely superb. Very imaginative, and tremdous fun.

Ultima IV - Mega Drive CRPG - The only game that would make me want to buy a console. A PC conversion would be very much welcome (although not going to happen is it).

Thief Gold & Thief II - Both PC FP Adventure

Against:

Diablo II - PC CRPG - I can cope with the looks, aside from perhaps looking too angular outdoors, it's the extremely tedious repetitive gameplay that does it for me.

Icewind Dale II - PC CRPG - Has the third editions rules (a con), lacks the sheer fun of the original.

 

Against:

Daggerfall(PC-"RPG") Looks like crap, combat is crappy, massive world would be appreciated if it wasn't so damn boring, and extremely buggy.

Morrowind-(PC-RPG)- The combat is boring and consists of mostly just clicking on enemies, it takes forever to get anywhere with cliff racers always chasing you, the dialogue sucks and the quests are boring and nearly interchangable.

 

I agree with Lemmings, Monkey Island II: Le Chuck's Revenge and Ultima Underworld II and Morrowind

By the end of the month I would say. Not that I'm lazy, I just want more people to have their opinion. Pity I can't post in other forums about the topic in this forum...

At this point Windows would give you a "Logical Error detected at memory block 10y2 0815." Hope you are planning to get them all under that 'series' plaq -much easier that way...

AGAINST: Morrowing. Too slow, too boring.

 

If that's the case Wirhe then some people need to make decisions rather than just nominating almost every damn game in a series because . Besides, all of those games are avaliable for sale in series format. Games such as Commander Keen and Super Mario were famous not because of just one game, but because of the series of games.

Same, but due of being the regular N stuff; childish.

You didn't get it right; I think the ending was pretty good if tedious thanks of the game trying to be both platformer and FPS, so...

Con: Tries to be FPS too without succeeding.

Also, I take back what I said about The Sims 2 and jump to the dark side.

Con: Too much whining and too stupid AI.

vote aganist Baldur's Gate 1 (one bad guy isn't enough, Wirhe)
i do acknowledge that BG1 is groundbreaking and all. i do, too, had a wonderful experience playing it, together with some curses.
point #1 : Comparing BG1 and BG2, BG1 is waaaay too tedious. Getting from one place to another involves loading of a few maps, and sometime a few cds. What does crossing a generic no story, no plot map do to the overall enjoyment of the game? It doesn't spell excitment nor anticipation to me, it was always "here we go again". The worst part, your characters got tired and started to complain and you are halfway, back and forth, to the next inn... There is a reason why BG2 changed all that.
point #2 : When the game came out, we clearly had the video card and the monitor to do 800*600. Even Age of Empire 2 and came before it can do 1280*960, but BG1 came with an unadjustable 640*480. If there is mortal sin in computer gaming, let it be "unadjustable". Out of all things, why there can't i adjust the resolution? Souldn't it be a given in any pc game? BG1 ignoring the capability of its current technology, ignoring there will be advancement in technology, ignoring people will still want to play the game witn AMD 64, 21 inches monitor and a Redeon 9800, fixed the resolution to 640*480.

Argee:

Baldur's Gate II - Way better than the orginal. Lots more action. Don't have to uncover totally useless parts of huge maps.

Half-Life - Best FPS (have not tried II yet, but will this weekend).

Heroes of M&M II - Best TBS game. Great orignal operatic soundtrack; highly addictive game play.

Icewind Dale - Lots of action, great soundtrack, nice artwork, some really fun dungeon crawling.

Might and Magic VII - Just a tiny bit better than M&M VI.

Planescape: Torment - Best story in a PC game, lots of atmosphere, great characters.

System Shock II - Almost as good as Half-life.

Unreal Tournament: Mindless action - action - action.

May have missed this one on the list:

Myth: The Fallen Lords - Unique RTS. Good storyline.

 

I would like to agree on System Shock II. Just got it, and it's great. I've played it before, but I was not sure on how good it is.

I would also like to nominate Team Factor. It is a great FPS that puts the emphasis on team-play(duh) and have great graphics. With the awesome weapon set, 48 weapons with only three misses*, and the three factions, SPETNAZ, NATO, and misc guerilla forces, all with different weapon sets.
To add to the replayability even more, each faction have four classes; the soldier, the heavy weapon specialist, the sniper, and the scout. What makes the game be nominated, is that the game is affected by RPG-ness.
You can access a RPG hud which shows your strength, stamina, stealth, awarness, marksmanship, and breath control. Those will be better the more you play i.e. if you shoot good, your marksmanship becomes better at the end of the round.
To even further enchance the gameplay, you can add bots to the game that is supported by the developers, 7FX, that can be added to both your team and the opponents. At most, 30 bots can be avaible, and that is on a normal singe-player game, making for some kick-ass combat. I've read somewhere that even more bots can be added at LAN-play and will check it out myself this weekend.
At last, the developers, 7FX, are adding more and more maps when they add patches to the game, further improving the replayability.
The only downsides I can come up with is that the AI can be slow at times and that the online community isn't too active nowadays, not a lot of players active. However, give me a PM and I will set up a fight, as long as I can be the guerillas.

Summary:
Pros:
Great RPG implentment, few bugs, great weapon set, good factions, realistic combat, teamplay required, active developers, support for many bots.
Cons:
Few bugs, sometimes slow bot AI, not too active player community.

*The misses are:
The Colt 1911 .45 have 7 bullets, not 8 like it is in the game.
The MP5K (and the MP5K with silencer)have 15 or 30 bullets, not 20 like it is in the game.
The vz.61 Skorpion have 10 or 20 bullets, not 25 like it is in the game.
Nothing too much, but you know me, the gunfreak who nitpicks.

 

Nominate (sorry if it already has been done, if so = agree)
- Perfect Dark N64 FPS (even better than Goldeneye)
- No one lives forever PC FPS (superb humor)

Agree: Might & Magic 7 (great game, and offers freedom), Baldur's Gate 2 (ok quests and lots of options), + Throne of Bhaal (even more options), Metroid Prime (great FPS, best IMO).

Against: Diablo 2 (way too repetitive = pure hack&slash & not fun for everyone), Super Mario Sunshine (worse than Super Mario 64 when it comes to gameplay).

 

Agree: Perfect Dark (can't believe I forgot about that...)

 

Oh crap, I've missed Perfect Dark? I've won several local tournaments with it, so I must agree on that one. Great game.

 

Disagree:

No one lives forever
Con: Sequel surpasses in every way. Clumsy.

Unreal Tournament
Con: Mindless action, action, action.

Banjo Kazooie
Con: Children ONLY.

Final Fantasy Tactics
Con: Again, children ONLY (due of story and characters).

Agree:

Alpha Centauri
Con: Outdated graphics and sounds. (Personally, I simply cannot play it anymore because of that.)

Duke Nukem 3D
Con: Unplayable on modern machines. (But the N64 version is )

Seriously, update and "serialize" the list. You haven't really given a good reason why not to, as it would make voting easier and listing clearer.

 

Agree:

Jagged Alliance 2: Great personality, challenging gameplay, balancing mercs, etc.

Duke Nukem 3D: Surprisingly easy to run on a modern machine, generally chock-full of goodness.

Half-Life: A.I., story, and the way the story is implemented, the world.

System Shock 2: Hands down one of the greatest RPGs ever. Great story, superb atmosphere, all around great game.

Deus Ex: Pretty much the same reasons as SS 2. Both are truly great games.

Diablo 2: Like it or not, the game is FUN. Plus it's got a really good story that sadly, is given short shrift.

Thief 1 and 2: Great world, story, atmosphere, groundbreaking concept. Plus, Garrett has to be one of the coolest game characters ever.

I'll also chip in my votes for PS:T, Doom 2, X-Com, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Fallout 1 and 2, Metroid (Super and Prime), Elie Force, MDK 2 (one of the hardest games I've ever played), NOLF (the original) and Metal Gear Solid.

Against: NOLF 2: Maybe it was just me, but NOLF 2 just didn't seem as funny or fun as the original. There were some really cool moments, (The trailer park in the tornado), but it just didn't feel right.

Any Final Fantasy: I truly can't stand these. They seem so slow and bloated. It's like they decided at some point to just make the stories twice as long as they should be, regardless of quality. Combat is either boring and dull, or boring and hyped up on sugar (cough, X-2, cough). And it just seems like such a pretentious series.

And to nominate: Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis.
Pros: Great shooter, lots of explosions, good story, fun, good graphics for the time. All in all, a great game.
Cons: A little bit too easy near the end.

Jet Force Gemini: Nintendo 64. Great third person shooter/explorer.
Pros: Great gameplay, weapons, humor, world that required the use of all three characters to get places, collecting the heads of decapitated enemies to unlock secrets, Crazy difficulty.
Cons: Bad multiplayer, slowdown, crazy difficulty.
