    Well, it's another name for a cup of coffee. As for its derivation, my 10th grade history teacher explained this to us, but that's a bit hazy -- I'll give it a try.

    In the 1800's, there was a secretary of war or the navy (if they had separate cabinet post for each branch, I don't recall) who decided that boats shouldn't have alcohol on them, so he ordered all alcohol removed from all navy ships. That left the strongest drink on the ships as coffee. The secretary's name was Joseph something or other, so the navy guys started calling coffee, "Joe" after him (and not all that fondly, I gather).

    Hope that's good enough. I know it's right unless my teacher was pulling our collective leg 25 years ago.
