Forget NYC, it sucks :) (I hate cities)

If you are big into nature, come to New England, particularly Massachusetts or Vermont for some nice hikes. There aren't any specific places, but pretty much anywhere in Vermont is nice for hiking, and Northeastern Mass is great (that's where I live, we have some good stuff around here, although nothing as spectacular as the grand-canyon, just beautiful woods and such).

The difficulty with seeing NYC (or any big city, really) properly is that you need a knowledgable guide, someone who will run you thru the touristy highlights on your way to seeing the good stuff.

If you get a chance - see Yellowstone National Park! The whole place is alive with geysers, thermal pools and all kinds of wildlife.

If you're anywhere in between Washington, DC and New York City on the East Coast, drop me an e-mail and I'lll meet you for beers!!!

If you're there in Fall you must go and look at New England. I only went during the summer but by all accounts it's beautiful with the trees turning.

My New York trips have run to a day here and there but try to get down to Astroland to ride the Coney Island Cyclone - it's an amazing rollercoaster. The place is under threat of development so it's a must do now. Best seats are in the back carriage, 2nd or 3rd row (ie not over the axles).
Also, head down to Six Flags Great Adventure if you want to ride Kingda Ka, the world's tallest and fastest coaster. It's in New Jersey and you can get a bus from the Port Authority afaik. (If you're hiring a car then it's easy).

I must admit my sole reason for visiting the US is the rollercoasters as it's my thing, so can't help much with other attractions!
