Not true! Oxford, iirc, brought out a dictionary the other year with words for helicopter, computer, internet... plus you still need to come up with terms for the latin halves of the scientific names of new species. Go Latin!

The festival of Samhain is celebrated the day before Hallo'ween (which Hallo'ween is based on), and according to Irish folklore is the day in which the border which separates the spirit world and 'our world' is at its weakest point. Masks are used to scare and amuse malevolent spirits.

Samhain is pronounced as 'So-ween'.

Unfortunately this holiday has been ruined by silly wiccans and silly 'death to false believers' Christians saying that Samhain is the Irish god of Death! Its actually a celebration of the harvest, and is associated with Lugh, the god of Light.

 

Strange thing. We bulgarians also have such time when the border between this world and the netherworld is fading, but it is a whole week just before new year and it is called "the dirty days", in which, according to the folklore the ghosts, goblins and vampires (yes, we have vampires) walk the earth. Again according to the folklore people are supposed to restrain from washing, cleaning or bathing because water is unclean in these days, also restrain from having sex because any child made in the dirty days will carry an evil spirit inside and turn into a vampire after it dies. Ashes from the fireplace should not be dumped outside, because this will take out the understanding and fortunate life in the house and give it to the demons... and so on.
Again I am amazed by the similarities in folklore.

On the other hand the same thing exists in roman mythology again around new year (march), and this is one of the main reasons for the cleansing (lustratio) of the roman army in march, at the begining of a new year of wars and battles.

 

Those customes are almost the same as the Irish ones for Samhain, thats very amazing and I will look more into Bulgurian mythology. Do you have any websites that you can recommend?

Off topic (sorry folks)

This is not the first time I notice similarities between Bulgarian and Irish folklore. The most clear one is in the traditional songs and dances though, as well as some traditional instruments. This is really odd, since historically the two nations have nothing in common. (or if they had it is not yet proven) Yet the close things are many, so I cannot help wondering... I have studied celtic mythology and tradition for some time because I was interested in druidism, which by the way is very close to protobulgarian shamanism, to the strong shamanic connection to nature, to their totemism and orendism (belief that a certain part of human or animal body contains divine power). I was stunned to know the huge similarity between the information about the druids, based on the songs of Amergin and Taliesin (spelling may be incorrect) and the info on protobulgarian shamanic rituals and believes and abilities, given by various early medieval historians.

Another important similarity is that both countries managed to preserve the old pagan rituals in their folklore by mixing them with christianity, so if you take a look at bulgarian folklore, what you will see is I.E. a few pagan holidays celebrated paralel with Christmas through a mixture of old shamanic and christian rituals.
