What should residents of the USA be called?

As liriodelagua said, in South America, people call North Americans to USA people, but that should be confusing too because Canada and Mexico are in North America.
Here in Spain, USA is called Estados Unidos, which means United States. So the people from there is called Estado-unidenses, which means something like people who 'unite' states.

 

While there are several countries in the americas, only one has the distinction of it's people being called "Americans", the United States of America. For a lot countries thier name is also associated with a race of people. This is especially true in the americas, or at least that has been my experience. In my former vocation I had extensive interaction with people of nationalities other than "Americans", and whenever we were expecting the arrival of someone from a foreign country you could almost always guess thier race as well as what thier general behavior will be. With the United States of America it is not so easy to guess these things because we are a nation of many ethnicities. "America" is not a country and "American" is not a nationality,race, or ethnicity. "America" is an idea, the "American Dream", and there is only one place on Earth where you can find it and that land is The United States of America, Sweet Land of Liberty!. Land where my father died, land where my mother cried, from every mountainside let freedom ring. Thats why so many from all over the world come here, and all those who fight and die to preserve that dream and all those who strive to attain that dream will forever be known as "Americans".
