*The following might be slightly off-topic*

Hello fellow fan. *does the secret Mason- er...Monkey Island-fan Handshake*

It is my favourite adventure game (okay, I have several favourites. But SMI/MI1 was my first favourite). And it is the first adventure game I remember playing in a way (but I only realized that that game had been MI1 later. It's a long story. Maybe I'll tell it some other time.)

Oh! Look behind you, a three-headed monkey!

    *runs and hides*

The first PC game I ever played? Well, the first I can recall was going to my local Dick Smith Electronics store after school most days and playing Prince Of Persia on the PC there. I adored that game but never actually finished it that I can recall. The best part was playing that while one of the staff members played the Doors' song "The End" from the Apocalypse Now soundtrack - complete with the helicopters coming in over the start of the song. Those were the days.

I'm suprised this game hasn't been mentioned yet; I think my first game was King's Quest on a mac.

@Faraaz: Yay, I thought I was the only one :D For me, it was Prince of Persia too. Dinky? Maybe. But it was soooooo fun! I can't believe I spent so many MONTHS playing it before finally completing it.

Wait, I remember... We got another game at the same time. Spot. It was a variant of that old board game (Othello I think), but with the 7up logo as playing pieces. And really, really silly music, especially on PC speaker :D

That was a couple of months after we got our first PC (386SX 16 Mhz! the fastest computer at the time! heh), sometime in... spring 1990, I think. Ah, the memories.

I played either Bard's Tale or some other text based RPG on a friends Apple IIc, as well as a slew of other games on the same system, and then a flight sim on the same friend's dad's IBM. This was arounfd 1985 or so. I was a console dude after that, until BG1, then I was hooked on PC possibilities...

As far as a game that really got me interested in gaming again in general, I would credit Descent, believe it or not. I still love that game.

I can't remember a game I played earlier than the very famous (at the time) purely text based adventure game that was slipped onto a number of mainframes before PC's were very popular. I think it was 'Colossal Adventure'. It was a good one too, which just shows what you can do with imagination, and of course your expectations were far less then.

After that there was Elite, the space exploration game. There was also a crude RPG game around that time (Bard's Tale?), that seemed to consist of pointlessly wandering around a town. I think the copy I played was incomplete, too, something already installed on my work computer by someone else. I never even made it out of town on that one, despite persevering for quite a while.

The early game that made the greatest impression on me was Ultima Underworld. It was truly groundbreaking at the time, a brilliant adventure, and I have no idea how much of my free time it sucked up, but it was an awful lot. UU2 was a great follow up, as well.

For playing with friends (on the PC), the American Football manager sim 'Football Pro' series around in the 90's had loads of us playing for many seasons. You could even design your own plays for that game, and run the draft....excellent

Pre PC (for me), I recall a bike racing game called 'Road Rash' on the Spectrum that was great fun, and an even earlier adventure game set in Midgard, Asgard and Hell that had an old (Viking?)decorative warmask as the main cover picture. Never learned how to finish the final piece of that one (and no boards to help out then). It was some combination of things and gods present that opened the final room.

Funny, I am playing that now. Although the old graphics need a bit getting used to (but then again, "Betrayal in Antara" had graphics that were not much better. And that was the first RPG [well, the closest thing to RPG] I every played)

The first computer game I've played must be Tetris (probably in year 90, when I was three)

Some of the first games we had in our computer were Dark Ages, Commander Keen and Cosmo (that green alien boy)
