When I was young, I thought I wanted to be a programmer. So, off I went to university, and studied computer science for 4 years.

I started working in London last year, as a programmer, and now in my second job, I've come to the realization that I enjoy computer science more than I do programming. I've also come to realize that programming in the industry is not nearly as much about problem solving as it is in computer science - its about implementation.

Still, I dont regret studying computer science, it just means I need to find a new career path away from programming, but possibly still in IT. maybe an analyst position, maybe network admin, who knows?

I'm also giving thought to studying finance part time.

A friend of mine told me that his dad told him, "Dont make your passion your career." At first it sounded stupid, but now, it kinda makes sense. My passion is largely computing. I spend all day working on a computer, then I get home and browse the internet or play games for another 2 hours. I think that might be part of the reason I dont dig it anymore.

Anyone looking to get into programming - dont get discouraged by me. Its not a terrible job. The pay is good, the hours are fine, and you can advance within the company (but this depends on more than your programming skills). The other thing I dont like is that you tend to have to specialize in a particular language. So you cant do C# for 5 years then carry on at teh same level in Java - even if you were educated in both, practical experience counts huge numbers, and recent experience much more so.

The only thing that puts me off finance is that I dont really like the whole corporate vibe. I dont know, maybe I could live with it, but the idea of 25-50 year old men showing off to each other all day doesnt appeal to me.

    Retired. :D

And I've done several different things already, most of them interesting.

I agree - hold on to dreams, and also be ready to do more things than you've thought of so far.
