When to get Imoen

    This has varied pretty much during the years I've played BG2. Mainly because while in the beginning rescuing Imoen was of utmost importance, later on when I started to do more and more quests overall in the game, I came to realise how great a pause there would be to the main plot if you leave all quests until after rescuing her.

    So now I walk the middleground. Slavers, De'Arnise, Shadelord, Unseeing Eye / Haer'Dalis' prison dimension rescue. And then to Spellhold. After that, do the rest. The order may differ of course, sometimes I do Firkraag before I go after Imoen but then skip Unseeing Eye and Haer'Dalis' prison dimension rescue later. Still, that's the general idea.

    I certainly agree that it is shortsighted to not do any quests before rescuing Imoen. At the very least, you should try to get the party you want together before going off to Spellhold. For example, if you want to have Mazzy in your party, then you obviously should do the Shade Lord quest beforehand.

    There is one final reason to go for Imoen early, and that is if you intend to keep her as a party member. If you are going to keep her, then it definitely makes sense to do it as early as reasonably possible, because if you do all of the quests before going to Spellhold, you will find that Imoen is lagging far behind the other NPC's in experience.
