    Actually the knights of solamnia in dragonlance weren't really paladins. For some reason it seemed to work like knights of the crown were fighters, knights of the sword were templars, and knights of the rose were paladins.

    Plus Sturm never was a knight of solamnia, remember? He couldn't prove his heritage and such.

    The lawful good requirement is what makes the palidan tragic. That conflict between law and good is was makes for good stories. I mean, what we're talking about here is a ruling class living off of the labor of oppresed peasants and serfs, people denied completely of freedom. The "chaotic good" palidan would be a rebel leader, not a knight :)
    Anyway, imagine a good idealistic rookie cop who vigorusly enforces marijuna laws. He arrests a man for growing 3 plants and the guy gets 10 years in prison, where as we all know truely evil things happen to him. But our "paladin" doesn't care, or at least doesn't think about it, because when he busted the guy he commited a lawful good action. Even tho the guys wife and child suffer, and they are innocents, this doesn't disturb our brave young "paladin" who was maintaining law and order. this doesn't move him into lawfull neutral territory, he believes the church will care for these now indigant people, and that the man in prison is getting what he deserves.
    this is why I see the comment about paladins not thinking for themselves somewhat accurate. They are nobility, they execpt the order of the world.
