    Grateful Dead - One From the Vault: The Great American Music Hall, SF, August, 1975.

    This is a much more disciplined Grateful Dead than usual. The playlist is tight and mostly great, largely from the 1975 release of the studio recording Blues for Allah. And of course, remastered in great sounding HDCD. Warning: rant to follow.

    If you don't think there is a difference between upscale technology (20 bit) and the standard Redbook CDs (old 16 bit), do yourself a favor and pickup an HDCD decoded player (if you can find a decent one that's not Chinese junk), and give an HDCD formatted disc a spin in the player.

    The main reason that 1985 standard CD Redbook technology is still with us today, 25 years later, I can see, is terminal greed on the part of song publishers who are trying to milk every penny out of their "ownership" of music that they have screwed everyone else out of, under the phony guise of "intellectual property." :rolleyes: And forget about SACD, at least for now. :mad:

    EDIT: If anyone is a little perplexed by this rant and Google "SACD is dead," they may become even more confused because of the speculation about what has happened to the new formats. However, this comment by musician/producer Al Kooper is quite revealing, IMO:

    Accept - Blood of the nations

    14 years after the last studio album, they are back. Even without Udo, but with Hoffmann, Baltes, Frank and Schwarzmann on board and with Tornillo doing an excellent job on vocals and managing to convince the majority of the fans, who could not imagine them without Udo (me included).

    Jimi Hendrix Experience - First Rays Of The New Rising Sun. The 2010 Remaster (which gives me a good excuse to write about one my favorite guitar player/classic rock bands :)). **** 4 out of 5 stars.

    Based on the 1971 posthumous release, Cry of Love, and released by the Hendrix estate, this is the unfinished project Hendrix was working on with the last incarnation of the Experience, when he died (or was murdered, whichever tale have you). After the demise of the Band of Gypsies, Hendrix reformed the Experience with ex-members Mitchell and Redding as his rhythm section. However, Hendrix dumped Redding at the last moment in favor of his friend, Billy Cox, who is a more than able bass player. The really important thing, in my opinion, is that he was back with Mitch.

    If you already have the 1997 release, I wouldn't bother, but if not, check it out. No matter what Jimi was playing: astounding flights of psychedelia, experiments in funk, or just hard driving rock, his playing and musical roots remained grounded in the Blues, and this rather eclectic recording of sundry tunes proves it. The remaster is not much better sounding than the 1997 release, IMHO. Outstanding tracks: "Freedom," "Dolly Dagger" and "My Friend" gets an honorable mention for being funny and clever.

    The 4 out of 5 stars is a "Hendrix rating" - compared to most other bands it would be 5 out of 5.
