After a couple weeks off to study I started back at work again yesterday meaning that I finally got back to doing some leisure reading. I finished Dark Force Rising yesterday and started on the final book in the trilogy - The Last Command.

AaAaaAAaaa! Pratchett's published another book? Gimme Gimme Gimme!

After finishing 'What Do You Say After You Say Hello?' by Eric Berne I started 'The Mysterious Flame Of Queen Loana' by Umberto Eco today.

Now I'll have to try not to read that in a one go, so it wouldn't distract my studies...Not to mention about getting that Pratchett book before christmas holiday...

I finished Specter of the Past - I remembered it being no where near as good as Zahn's first three Star Wars books and I was right. I am going to continue on tomorrow with Vision of the Future.

I finishhed Vision of the Future yesterday and I continued on with Zahn's Star Wars books to start on Survivor's Quest this morning. So far it has been slow paced and probably the least interesting of Zahn's books that I have read.

Zahn really should have just quit at the end of the initial trilogy - all of his subsequent Star Wars books have not been anywhere near as good. In the first trilogy we had the interactions of three strong and interesting villains - in the subsequent books we have had none.

H.P. Lovecraft - At the mountains of madness

It's a collection of novellas, one giving the title to the book. They're very good. Made the mistake of reading one just before going to bed the other day :)

I finished Survivor's Quest and I must say that I was quite disappointed. The plot twist was blatantly obvious and the villains were just plain dull. Oh, and since when is Stormtrooper armour capable of withstanding multiple blaster bolts? If I remember in the films a single blaster shot that was anywhere near the Stormtrooper was good enough for the kill.

I have started on Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore. So far I am not impressed.

Y'know, now that I think about it, all of Zahn's recent work--and I'm not talking Star Wars--has been weaker than his older stuff.

I finished Vector Prime yesterday and started on Onslaught by Michael Stackpole. I must say that I am quite unimpressed by the New Jedi Order series so far. The whole concept of the villains just seems silly to me.

    SPOILER
The infamous death of Chewbaca in Vector Prime resulted in my  so far that my eyes just about stuck in the top of my head. The whole notion that these little critter can generate gravity wells and create mini black holes is silly enough but the whole Chewie shaking his fists at the descending moon while Han could do nothing but watch was just so contrived and laughable. It was so blatant that they just wanted to kill a main character off in the first book in order to establish that there was a real threat. Quite pathetic really.

Edit: I finished Onslaught. It was better than Vector Prime but still nothing special. I guess I will continue on to the third book but my hopes are not particularly high.

I'm a third of the way through Memories of Ice, and am now beginning to get really interested in these books. The T'lan Imass, Crippled God, Deck of Dragons and K'rul are intriguing, and the Bridge Burners en masse are fascinating and individually entertaining.

Yeah I am about half way done Ruin and it is about the same as Onslaught. For the life of me I don't know how they managed to milk this series for another 20 books. A 250 page sabaac game between Lando and Han would probably be more interesting than reading about the Yuuzhong Vong.

Edit: I liked the ending of Ruin - but then at the very end they basically said that the most interesting character plus one of my favourite characters were going to be dropping out of the series for a while. If I didn't have the books piled up waiting to be read, and if I had actually brought anything else to Chicago with me, I would probably stop at this point but as it is I have nothing else to read so I guess I will just keep on with it for now. Hero's Trial by James Luceno is up next.
